| Hi Everybody:) I'm a newbie (to the board and the breed),we've always owned husky/shepard breeds so I am in desprate need of feedback from your (Rott) group. As briefly, yet thoroughly as possible, here's the run-down; We were out to adopt(rescue)an animal to add to our family, after some searching we found, and decided on a 17 month old Rottweiler named Sasha. The only info the shelter had for her was her age,and that she was a "turn-in",by the owner. So here we are,we've now had her for two full weeks,I've been studying the breed, getting to know her,we LOVE her, she's fit into our home perfectly.....then the other day we hear her "yipe" in pain, after watching, touching, ect we narrowed it down to her LEFT HIP....it started out just when climbing, like up the step into the front door...but in less then THREE DAYS,it's now progressed that quickly, she seems to be yiping more and more, she can't even jump on our bed anymore now:( There's no visible injuries, nothings "happened" since she's been here with us...this all just started and got worse in three days...could it be the "hip dysplasia/arthritis" that I now have learned that is so prevailant in Rott's???? Any other possibles here that I could/should look into to???? I want to end in saying that she is NOT in any type of "constant",or horrific pain, and I know we're going to have to get her to the vet ASAP,it's just going to take another week or so,as we just were not prepared for a vet-ER so soon you know...so my hope is that somebody here can offer us somethings to atleast study/look into/ect in the meantime. Thank you so much for any help/advice/feedback/thoughts we can get here, they will be much appreciated by myself, hubby and our four kids who already ADORE Sasha too ofcourse:) |

| Re: Is "sudden" hip dysplasia/arthritis possible??? before anything, i would get her to a vet(asap) and get xrays of her hips/back and knees area. rule out hip displacia, back injury, arthritis,or cruciate. anything could have happened.for some of these problems, the earlier attended to, the better. if she did a bad move, it's cold, or heavy exercised, she could have aggrevated something. rule out what is wrong first and take it from there. there are meds for most conditions and things to help her be more comfortable. welcome to the forums...keep us posted on your girl's results.

| Re: Is "sudden" hip dysplasia/arthritis possible??? I agree that a relatively sudden lameness is cause for a visit to the vet ASAP all you can do until then is limit her to indoor/crate rest, no running around! Limping can be caused by anything from a muscle strain to HD to a knee injury and there's no way to know for sure without a thorough exam and an x-ray and there's no point in home treating until you know exactly what you are treating. Often these dogs don't show sign of pain until they are REALLY sore and the fact that she can't jump up on the bed (which she could before) means she's GOT to be sore! So no, it may not be horrific but it IS affecting her normal movement. I'm one of those people who punishes my own body a lot (I play rugby & run a lot) and I know from experience that the sooner I get to a doctor to have something looked at, the quicker recovery will be! The same goes for my dog. God luck with Sasha and let us know how you make out at the vet.

| Re: Is "sudden" hip dysplasia/arthritis possible??? Thank you guys:) I noticed today she seems to have lost a bit of wieght too...I just can not believe HOW FAST(again all in about the last three days),she seems to have went from "fine" to...this:( What is most baffeling is how she can walk good, stand good,ect...it's only certain more random moves/moments that cause the yiping/pain out of the blue?! Ughhhh, first Rott...only here two weeks...instant connection.....and this happens,I soooo hope it's something affordable to treat. Thank you again for your help and good wishes,I will update soon:) |

| Re: Is "sudden" hip dysplasia/arthritis possible??? In addition to drawer tests, xrays and a CBC, you might have the veterinarian run tick titres on your dog.

| Re: Is "sudden" hip dysplasia/arthritis possible??? very good suggestion. if no obvious bone/muscle problem found, do a complete tick panel. ticks causes diseases that will cause pain, lethargy, ect.
