Acl

My 7 year old is having surgery today on her ACL. It started bothering her on Sunday night, I took her yesterday & they did x-rays & sure enough. I dropped her off this morning. She'll have to stay at least 48 hours, they would prefer longer, but she hates the vet, & I don't know how she'll do. I usually give her valium just for a regular appt. Anyone else go through this? They say recovery can be 6-8 weeks. I also have a 20 week old, that won't understand whys he can't play!

Re: Acl

6-8 weeks is very optimistic. More like 4-6 months for full recovery. These surgeries are very fragile so pay close attention to the rehab period. I have been through two surgeries! Both with young dogs and young dogs in the house.

Get onto the orthodogs yahoo group for lots of helpful information from people who have been there and done that.

Re: Acl

Are you having the TPLO or the extracapsular repair done? I had TPLO done on my dog and the recovery period was 12 weeks duration. The first 6 weeks she was crated except for on lead toilet breaks.

The 20 week old will know quite well there is no play if your girl is crated.
Best of luck with the surgery. Hope it all goes well.

Oh I haven't heard of that one. It's nearly 5 years since my girl had her last one. Can you explain what TTA is please.

I hope all went well with the surgery.

I think the TTA is similar to the TPLO just not as invasive. I, too, would like to read more about it. Abby had TPLO surgery this summer and is doing great.

Re: Acl

I did a google search on this procedure and it looks to be a less invasive breakthrough in ligament surgery. I wish it was around when my girl had her 2 x TPLO surgeries.

Chantal I wish your girl a smooth and uneventful recovery. I hope you will come back and bring us up to date.

Re: Acl

She's doing well, here at home. Just keeping her confined to my husbands office & away from the puppy. He said that he was very impressed with the amount of weight that put on it the next day after the surgery. He would expect to see that by day 3 or 4, so he was very pleased.

You can look up Tibial Tuberosity Advancement on wikipedia if anyone is curious.
