Hudson's getting them removed - in pairs!

Well, the time has come to get Hudson neutered, remove rear dew claws and to remove baby canines that never fell out. Everything is going in pairs!

We are making an appointment for when my BF has 5 days off of work so he can stay with Hudson during recovery and also to make sure he keeps it low key the first few days.

Anything I should expect? Shelby got spayed 3.5 years ago, so it's been a while. We plan on keeping him on leash outside to pee/poo, no going upstairs, and basically keep him from doing anything strenuous until he heals. About how long after the surgery do you think he'll be himself again? I have heard it's easier recovery than a spay - but I could be wrong...

He will be himself again the very next day! The hard part will be keeping him from playing with Shelby.
Are his rear dew claws loose? They should be an easy surgery...just make sure that he does not lick the bandages on his feet.
The neuter is also no big deal, and the baby teeth should come out easily also.

He would probably be fine to have his neuter, etc., done on a Friday, and everything should be good to go by the Monday...he would be fine if he is not watched for 5 days if you crate him when you go out.

Re: Hudson's getting them removed - in pairs!

Thanks Gina - that makes me feel better...I'm really worried about keeping him calm the first efw days afterwards, but it's definitely good to know that it's a pretty easy recovery.

His rear dew claws are loose - and flap around. We've been keeping an eye on them when he plays around because I'm worried they may get caught on things. We keep the nail very short.

I actually just got an appointment made for Friday 3/7. BF has off until Wednesday (just how his work schedule is) so that makes me more comfortable that he'll have company while he's healing. We will be bringning him to the vet Thursday night and picking him up Saturday morning.

He is always crated when we're not home or can't supervise.

I will have to buy one of those Elizabethan collars to keep him from licking wounds.

The loose dew claws come off easy...just a snip and a stitch and they are fine...some of the tight ones make it a harder surgery.

If you can take him in on the Friday early morning on an empty stomach...it will probably be easier on him...then he does not have to spend the whole night alone and worry. Once they have the neuter/spay...they sleep the whole night off at the vet clinic...but I always take all of my dogs/fosters in on the morning of the surgery. I think it makes it less traumatic. Often they come in, get a sedative...and have the surgery...sleep...and sleep...and the next morning the vet gives them a quick check-up, checks the surgery site and they are usually released in the a.m. Give him a bit of food and some water...and let him rest the day you bring him home.

Also watch his stomach...some of mine seem to get diarrhea from the anesthetic.

He will be fine...much harder on the owner, then on the dog.

That's a good point - I will have to ask about bringing him in the morning of instead of the night before - which I kind of didn't want to do anyway. I will offer to bring him in really early so they will have plenty of time to prep him.

I asked them if I could bring his blanket in with him so he's more comfortable - he has this Winnie the Pooh blanket that he carries around with him and he drags it to where he wants to nap. Cutest thing ever, and I think it'll help soothe him.

Re: Hudson's getting them removed - in pairs!

Hudson's been home for 24 hours. He was his energetic self when we picked him up and the doctor also prescribed us some mild sedatives for a few days to keep him a bit more calm.

He didn't come home with any bandages, we've just been told to keep him on leash when outside, no running in the house (he's crated most of the time) and we have to wrap his hind legs when we go outside so his incisions won't get wet. He looks like a race horse after we have wrapped his legs in "Press N Seal"

He's not acting different at all (except for when he's been sedated) and wants to play ALL the time! It's been tough keeping his from playing with Shelby so we decided to keep it safe and we moved his crate into the family room where we spend most of the time so he can chill out in there and still be "with us" he's laying in his crate now, just watching out the window. We go back in 10 days to have the stitches removed.

I think it was harder on me than it was him!

How old is Hudson? My name is Frank and I posted question about my Rotties dark urine a few days after neuter.

Hudson is about a year, he was a rescue so we're not sure on his exact age...

Try to remember to ask the vet for a cream called "bandaid" it's to stop her from over licking the wounds. It orks great and taste aweful.
