| Rocky is scheduled for neuter... If you have read my past posts, then you are familiar with my situation. Rocky is scheduled for his neuter on March 4th. He is on antibiotics now week five and six to be on the safe side and probably will renew another two weeks to go beyond the neuter. His current urine sample looked okay, all negative results except still with the protein at +++? What can I expect in an older dog as far as recovery? Right now he looks good, eating and drinking normal, long walk in the AM, short walk in the PM, takes his Glucosamine and Celadrin everyday, eats mostly dry Wellness CORE grain free food. Since he was diagnosed with chronic prostatitis, most likely after the procedure, his prostate will shrink in two to four weeks I am told and from what I have researched. Also his symptoms if related to am enlarged prostate may subside with no more antibiotics needed. If not, somehow he will need an abdominal ultrasound with a fine needle biopsy to see whats happening in the prostate, does this sound right? I called one diagnostic center and they quoted me $650 +/-? I was going to ask the doc who is doing the neutering if they can ultrasound him while is is under for the neuter?

| Glad to hear you have a set date for the neuter. As far as older dogs getting neutered....most have no problems at all. I know that I took many older foster dogs to be neutered and they were maybe a little quieter for the first couple of days, and had a bit of swelling....but nothing to worry about. Neuters are quick surgeries. Make sure he does not lick at the stitches...get one of the Elizabethan collars to put on him if needed. Does the vet think there is more going on then the inflammed prostate? I would wait till after the neuter and see how things go...no use wasting money if it's the prostate that is causing all of his problems. Gina

| Re: Rocky is scheduled for neuter... Thanks for the reply. Having him neutered is harder on me then it will be on him. But it has to be done. I had to wait a few to get approved for a low cost from a different vet and he is still on antibiotics also. He is now seven and has some prostate issues, mainly enlargement and then a bloddy discahrge. It all started about 8 weeks ago with some bloody discharge, not a urinary type, much brighter red. And maybe their was a female in heat somewheres because he was getting erections at night and released on a few occasions only to find some bloody discharge, really a mess. Other then that, no fever, eating and drinking is okay, walking good, etc. So, if the procedure helps him with these problems, great, if not, have to move forward with an ultrasound.

| Re: Rocky is scheduled for neuter... I had my male neutered at 6 years of age due to an enlarged prostate. He had no problem afterwards at all. His recovery was quick and mostly pain-free. It hurt my SO more then it did the dog! I just told Bruce to cross his legs, he wouldn't feel a thing. You are doing the right thing for your dog. All will be fine.I see you're from NJ....this neutering phobia must be a Jersey thing, for Bruce is from NJ too!

| Re: Rocky is scheduled for neuter... FYI, Whenever I have an "older" dog neutered, I discuss anesthesia options with my vet...some are much easier on older dogs than others. What anesthesia is used can make a huge difference on post-op recovery. Certain anesthesias are easier on the kidneys, and the dog recovers much faster as well. I've heard of a couple of rotti's (one on this board) whose dogs started seizuring post-anesthesia and it was ultimately linked to the type anesthesia used. My current foster is also a Rocky!! Good luck with your boy. Last edited by fostermom; 02-26-2008 at 12:48 PM. |
