| My new puppy has anemia and UTI, Crystals and out of range readings in her urine Has anyone ever gone thru this..... First, two week ago, we took her to vet # 1 who i've had not so good opinions of (can't find a good vet in the area!!!). We took her in for a puppy wellness check and her 2nd parvo shot. I discussed with the vet that i found her to urinate excessively and almost immediately after drinking water. His response was " she's a puppy " and blew it off. her stool sample came back negative, a quick check and off we go. Over the next two weeks.................................... still peeing alot. We take up her water at 8pm so that she doesnt howl during the night to go out. The potty/housebreaking training is slow since we both work out of the hosue. With alot of searching and inquiring, we found a new vet and went to him on Saturday. Parvo shot # 3, introductions, took Porsha along with us too. Had a sample of urine to give him and told him of the frequencies and the excessive thirst. Her urine came up with abnormal #'s, there was puss in it and her PH level was high along with something else that i don't remember offhand. He confirmed a UTI. He also took a blood sample. He was concerned about a liver shunt which explains the excessive thirst. Yesterday we spoke with him after part of the results came in. She is confirmed with having crystals in her urine. He also indicates that she is anemic and most likely from internal parasites. Her breeder said she was dewormed. We live in the Northeast and there are no active fleas. The cultures are all due in by the end of the week. He will be able to determine the problem further and whether the urine problem is genetic. I also have contacted the breeder since we are within close proximity to our 14 day window (which expired). Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of this. My puppy is 10.5 weeks old |

| Re: My new puppy has anemia and UTI, Crystals and out of range readings in her urine first question...the urine that was tested and sent out was it what you collected or did they get a sterile sample direct from her? urine that sits out and was collected via void(when she pottied) tend to form more bacteria and crystals. direct sterile from her is a truer reading. was her kidney levels checked? good thing to rule out kidney problems. puppies can get vaginitis and/or urine infections at this age. but i would want to make sure urine used was clean, kidneys are fine and glucose is normal. vitamin c helps bring her ph to a more acidic level and helps too. how anemic was she? did you run a fecal exam?

| Re: My new puppy has anemia and UTI, Crystals and out of range readings in her urine I obtained the urine by holding a container under her. She had a fecal done in the office. As for the UTI, vaginitis, etc. I thought i understood that puppies at this age shouldn't get it. She is too young ???? She isn't severely anemic but she has it !! |

| Re: My new puppy has anemia and UTI, Crystals and out of range readings in her urine hi. my rottie has suffered on and off with recurrent uti's and struvite crystals. this started when she was approximately 12 wks. old and she is now 4. every now and then she starts producing sediment within her urine and her ph gets extremely alkaline at around 8.5 and thats when the crystals start forming in alkaline urine. my vet has me check her urine at home with multistix just to monitor the ph if it gets high i start her on cd prescription diet dog food just to drop the ph of the urine. she also gets cranberry capsules every day just to keep her urine on the acidic side so the bacteria won't adhere to the bladder. also my vet wants her to drink as much water as possible to help flush out any sediment within the bladder because if it stagnates there thats how the bacteria begin to multiply and the problem starts all over again. good luck with your puppy once you get this condition under control its easy to manage. joy |

| Re: My new puppy has anemia and UTI, Crystals and out of range readings in her urine i would retest the urine after this bout but using a sterile sample the vet can obtain directly from her for a truer reading. yes, puppy females can get UTI and vaginitis. vitamin c and cranberry tablets help acidify urine and keeps it in check. sometimes you might need a special diet for awhile if they continue to find crystal sediments. but it is very important to test a fresh sterile urine collection. as for the anemia, your vet may suggest a supplement vitamin until better.
