| Our pup has started to lose fur around his eye. There are no other symptoms, he is eating ok, the area doesnt seem to hurt or irritate him. There is a tiny red point in the middle of it, which didnt appear until a few days after we noticed it. We think it may be a flea allergy, but it is febuary and is now 6 degrees Celcius, and sub zero at night! surely flea season hasn't started. I have attached a picture showing a bit of his normal fur and the bald spot. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. |

| It could be mange. Hair loss around the eyes is a classic symptom. Have the vet do a skin scraping, and they will look under the microscope to see the mites. Gina

| Re: Hair loss around eye Demodex (a type of mange) is quite common in puppies and usually resolves itself. Hair loss around the eyes is the most common and although I would get it diagnosed, if that is the diagnosis I would not do a mytoban dip. Just my experience...

| Re: Hair loss around eye I believe that your dog maybe dealing with demodex also which is very common among puppies, sometimes requiring treatment sometimes not. All dogs have demodex mites on their skin actually every mammal including humans have it in small numbers, does not cause problems into numbers get too high. There are many good treatments out there if the dog requires treatment. My long haired dachshund who was a rescue from a pet store had a small case of it, but I have known many others that had generalized demodex that needed though treatment to get rid of it. There are two kinds localized and generalized, localized which is very easy to treat which sounds like what your puppy may have. Take him to the vet for a skin scrape to see if that is what you are dealing with, or something else. Good Luck. |

| Re: Hair loss around eye Hello. My previous Rott had this happen every Fall when the leaves start to change colors and fall from the trees. The vet said it was some kind of allergy. The vet did give me eyedrops to use if the eyes were getting "goopy" (discharge) or if it seemed to be really bothering him. However, it did not ever seem to bother him and he had no other symptoms but the loss of hair. The hair would grow back by Christmas time/early January. I would not worry about this too much unless it looks to be really bothering him or he starts to show other symptoms that something is wrong. It just looks like he's wearing a mask for a couple of months ! |
