Unhappy Brown vaginal discharge

Hi everybody, this is my first post here, though I've been reading a lot in the past year.

Yesterday morning when I walked over to my Rottweiler bitch, I noticed a brown stain on the floor where she had slept. I thought it was strange, but it was only slightly brown and seemed dry then, so I forgot about it.

This morning there was more of the same spotting, but this time I could see that it was slightly gooey and much more brown in appearance.

I checked her ears and couldn't find out where it was coming from. Finally I realized it was a vaginal discharge. Her last heat was about four or five months ago, her second one.

I never noticed brown spotting like this before. Could this be the beginning of her 3rd heat cycle? or should I be worried.

In the past she only began to bleed pink stuff and then red... never brown.

Thanks all.

Re: Brown vaginal discharge

My female had this happen at age six, was not a heat cycle, was a pyametra, uterus infection. Very serious if this is the drainage you are seeing. My girl went downhill in 48 hours and the clinic had to do an emergency spay that night. She recovered fine in about a week. Very scary if its an aggressive infection. Get here checked out ASAP.

Re: Brown vaginal discharge

Please listen to rottiesnumberone's advice. The same happened to my last girl. No symptoms until she started dripping brownish discharge. She seemed just fine. Suddenly she was asking to go out every 10 minutes. I called the vet and he said,"I want to see her NOW". We arrived and Shenna jumped right out of the car, ran in, wagging and all happy. The vet got her to xrays and suddenly, He had her shaved and under. He came out for a second and said we need to operate now. I couldn't believe what was happening. When the operation was over, he showed me her uterus. It was the size of a giant balogna. I don't know how she even kept that in her body. The vet said that rotties have such a deep body, the diseased uterus had plenty of room to spread out. She had pyametraosis. She should have been spayed years before this. He kept warning me to spay her but, I couldn't see removing an organ from a dog for no reason. So lesson learned. Lola was spayed before her second heat. Shenna recovered in less than a week. All good things to your girl, I hope it isn't serious but please have her checked.

Re: Brown vaginal discharge

first question. are you sure it was vaginal discharge? did it have a smell to it?
first rule out, could it have been anal gland discharge.
if it is vaginal discharge-i take it she is about 1-2 years old by your description-is it dark brown or a tan straw brown color? does it have a smell to it? how is her attitude? sometimes the very beginning of a heat cycle(in my dogs this happens up to one week before the actual bleeding) you can see a brownish/tan gooey discharge that later turns into the usual heat blood discharge.
pyometria, which is what the above have described is more common in older females-over 5 years of age. but it can happen at any age.
if concerned, if a fever, vomiting, lethargy behavior please conatct your vet. they can perform a vaginal smear, blood work or /and xray to rule out pyometria vs early heat signs.

Re: Brown vaginal discharge

One of my girls had pyometra as just 12 months of age. She had emergency surgery.
I would take the dog to the vet if you are concerned.
