Re: HeartGuard and Frontline

Thanks targonrotts, I just noticed that you are from Miami. I just moved up from there (kendall) last year.

Well, anyways, the rabies vacc is now done every 3yrs? Is that just in Dade county, or all over florida? Kevlar doesn't get her next round until Oct. 4. and I think that she gets the rabies vacc. @ her 16 week shots.

I have moved her to 3 meals a day now. Her bloaty looking stomach has gone away and the gas too. She still poops like a maniac, about 6 times a day, but that isn't a problem. I do have a small concern with her bad breath. She doesn't have that "puppy breath" smell, it smell like bad fish with slobber, ugh!

I am surprised with her weight gain, she has gained 1 1/2lbs since saturday! Is that too much? My vet told me as long as she doesn't gain way too much weight a week ( what is too much?) she will be ok with her joints.

Well thanks anyways again,

Arturo

Re: HeartGuard and Frontline

I am very concerned with giving the KC vax, especially on such a young puppy. Are you in a hot bed of active KC coughing dogs? All of my dogs are show dogs and I have NEVER given KC to my dogs.
Are you completely sure that the puppy really is 8 weeks? This puppy is sounding a lot younger. Do you have registration papers or other proof of date of birth?

Re: HeartGuard and Frontline

yep, here from miami!

in dade county it was changed to allow the rabies every 3 years if vaccs manufacturer recommends that particular kind every 3 years. check in your area if that applies. also, check what the minimum age for rabies vaccs is. i personally like to wait till about 5-6 month to do it for the first time.

her fishy breath...have you noticed her licking or dragging her behind? it can be anal gland breath!(might need them expressed) or it can be can food(do you use it?). you can start getting her used to doggie toothpaste with a soft finger brush.offer her large knuckle bones to chew on...watch for things she can accidentally swallow!

about her weight, keep an eye that she does not look like she is loosing her figure, so to speak. as long as she does not look pot bellied or has no waist, she is growing and gaining daily...especially that she does not have litter mates to compete with!

as to the kennel cough question...yes, florida is a pain for kennel cough. we get it at the clinic at least twice a year! and we see it around show circuits. so yes, we do use KC vaccs down here. most people do pups at about 8 weeks before they sell or when they are older and starting to show or need to board.

and yes, i have seen 8 week old rotties weighing about 6-7 lbs....and most have turned out to be normal sized or on the smaller side, but healthy.working at a clinic for 16 years, you get to see it(almost)all!

good luck with your pup! hope you can make it down for oktoberfest next month!

Re: HeartGuard and Frontline

She doesn't drag her rear end at all. I also don't use can food. yaka kaka! I think it might be the canidae, but everyone that I ask says that it doesn't happen to their dogs. Who knows.

When I was feeding her 2x a day, she looked like a pot bellied pig. Now that I feed her 3x times a day and she is eating her kibble completly dry, she has her "figure" back. I have also noticed that she is more "puppy" now that she eats more often. Before all she did was mope around, now she runs and chews on all her toys like no tomorrow.

She is also more receptive to commands and is more house broken! When we first got her, she pee'd all over the house, it has been 2 days since then. We are crate training her, and she pee'd and pooped the first 2 days in there. We are well aware of the bladder holding thing while she is young and how long to keep her in there @ a time, but the last 2 days, she held it for over 4 hours while we were at work. We were surprised.

She is still sniffling and sneezing, but I think it might be allergies (we have a cat). Her eyes stopped "leaking". I myself have been sneezing and sniffling for the last couple of days. I am going to take her in again just to make sure it just allergies and not something more serious.

Oh, about the size thing, here I am hoping she was going to be a "260lb rockwiler" ( that was a joke)

Ok since were on the subject of Heartgard, How many of you give your dog this to prevent heartworm? I know I am. My 1st Rottie ,Roscoe, died of heartworm and I am not gonna let Zeke die of the same thing. For about $70 a year its well worth it...

My boy was 7.4 lbs at 8 weeks. The vet said he was healthy and looked fine. He eats a ton and is growing great. He has another round of shots coming up on the 8th and I will see how much he has gained. I do not think anything is wrong with a small pup as long as he is active and eating great and has no other medical conditions.

I also feed my boy 3 meals a day, but he does not poop 6 times daily! He does 2 - 4, but has never gone more than 4.

Re: HeartGuard and Frontline

Both Heartgard Plus and Frontline Plus are both safe to be started at 6wks of age. I always start the Heartgaurd and Frontline Plus at 6wks of age. The frontline will help prevent any flea infestation and reactions/allergies to fleas and prevent tape worms. These are two very good medications and will keep your dog both heartworm and tape worm free.

Kevlar is doing well MarleysMama, she just got over some heavy duty diarrhea. She was actually peeing out her butt.

We had to board in Miami when we went to Key West during our Vacation. We actually picked her up from the boarding facility and jumped right on to the highway to come back home to jacksonville. We took her to the vet when we got back when we noticed she was all bloated and SUPER GASSY.

During the drive, she farted every 15 mins and litterally put tears in our eyes. The 5 hr drive was not a pleasant one, we dealt with her gas and me hearing my fiance yelling at the manager from the boarding place the whole ride up. We were told it could be either the water she drank did not agree with her or stress. My vet and us think they mixed her food with some other dog's food. Of course the manager denied that (even though when we picked her up, her food scoop was in another dog's food bag). My vet did not want to take a chance with a possible parasite infestation from the well water, she prescribed Metranidazole and changed her diet to pumkin for day and boiled chicken and rice for 3 days. On the 3rd day, add kibble to the chicken and rice mix.

One vet visit and 65 dollars later, she is much better. The meds are doing it's job, no more gas and firmer poop. We have another visit on wednesday to do a follow up. When we took her to the vet, we noticed she lost about 2lbs during her ordeal. She now weighs 31.6 lbs. Hopefully she'll gain that back and then some.

Arturo
