Need some fur fast !

My male got a hold of a tire and decided it was really a nice toy. He played with it for about an hour, shaking it and running through the yard with it. In that one hour he wore the fur off the bridge of his nose to a raw spot. We need some fur on there, dog show season is coming up very soon.

What is the best way to grow fur on there again in a reasonable amount of time. Should I leave it moist with vitamin E or something or keep it dry ?

My guy plays with his jeep tire every day for long periods of time. We also have the "missing hair issue". I don't know of any methods to stimulate hair growth but I always make sure to put an antibiotic ointment on it so it doesn't get infected.

I am not a conformation person but did work at a vet where a dobie breeder would bring her dogs, I remember that one of her dogs got into a tiff over some toy or something and had to have several sutures, I asked if that would hurt his show chances and she said 'no, that the judges allowed for "accidents and such' but not confirmation defaults'.

Re: Need some fur fast !

I would want to try to make sure that you minimize the scare tissue. So don't use hyrodgen perioxide. I would use antibiotic ointment and or vit.E oil. The important thing about the location of this is if scar tissue/callous builds up then it could look like the dog has a Roman nose. But that would be a lot of effort on your dog's part to get it to that state.
As Chivas has said, don't worry about it too much. People think that such blimishes are important, but they really are not. Relax and think of all of the fun and enjoyment your dog had being a dog, playing with the tire.

Re: Need some fur fast !

it will most likely be fine. apply triple antibiotic twice a day, keep it clean and avoid further trauma to it. a good judge will not worry over it. dogs will be dogs.
but be careful with tires...as much as they love them, they can lose teeth swinging them and tossing them. i had one lose his front tooth throwing tires in the yard! and careful with radials.

Re: Need some fur fast !

I also agree a triple active oitment such as neosporin 2xs a day. It will keep it moist and allow tissue to grow back without becoming hard. D. Ervin

Re: Need some fur fast !

Thank you for all the replies. He won't be playing pit crew any longer. I didn't think he could do that much damage to himself in a few minutes time. The tire was a small trailer tire, I knew enough not to give him a regular tire because of the steel cords in it. The cords can really wear their teeth.
