Loosing hair, hard skin on elbows

Hi all,
mine rottie is almost 3 years old and is a great, lovely and happy dog. From the beginning he has a spot with no hair on his elbows and vet keeps telling me it is a beauty fault on them. He lays a lot in the garden and on the floor and since over here is hot most of the time he refuses to use blanket to lay on it. I suppose it wears off because of that. Last two months it keeps getting bigger and starts to worry me. Is there a way to cure this?

Re: Loosing hair, hard skin on elbows

Large breed dogs have a tendency to form calluses on their elbows because of their heavy weight when laying on hard surfaces. If your vet has excluded a skin disease, I don't you should worry.

My girl is now 5 years old, and her calluses are starting to get more noticeable, I just put a little vitamin E oil on them each day so they do not crack-they never bother her.

Re: Loosing hair, hard skin on elbows

My boy has these too and I use vitamine E as well. Just buy the capsules...poke the capsule with a pin and squeeze the gel onto the bald spot. It really seems to help the hair grow back too. The trick is to keep the dog from licking it all off right away (apparently it tastes yummy!).

It's from laying on the hard surfaces. It won't hurt him unless they lacerate.

I would keep some sort of bag balm, oil, cream or vitamin E on them daily to keep the skin soft.
