Parvo 13 week old pup

My wife and I are at a loss for words. We lost our 8yr old Zeus to bone cancer at the end of April. We did our homework and researched an excellent breeder along with the dog's pedigree and purchased a new pup. We brought Rocco home on July 2nd. He received his first Parvo shot on July 3rd. His second on August 6th and now on August 12th our vet informed us that he has Parvo. He stopped eating on Saturday afternoon and was starting to vomit. He had loose stool Saturday night and was very lethargic. He threw up again at 4am on Sunday. He still wouldn't eat so I went to the store and bought some soft food for him to try. He would lick it but would not eat. He still drank water but threw it up a couple of hours later. We brought him to the vet on Sunday at 1pm. Monday morning at 8:00am he advised us that he had Parvo.
My wife and I are very cautious because we know that Rotties are at risk for parvo. He isn't brought to any pet stores and all dogs have been kept away from him. He is fed Wellness food and is taken care of like our human children, it is not fair.
Our vet stated that there is a 50%-60% chance of recovery. He is on IV fluids and he stated that he was going to administer Tamiflu. Is there anything else that can be done for our pup. I have the utmost confidence in our vet but if there is anything else out there that can help I'm open for anything. Thank You

Re: Parvo 13 week old pup

Here's a thread on another member who lost their puppy recently to Parvo. One of the members recommends doing a search on Parvaid.

I don't have any words of wisdom, just wanted to let you know that warm thoughts are heading your way and I will be hoping and praying your pup makes a full and speedy recovery.

Re: Parvo 13 week old pup

Such awful news to hear.
Yes..we just had another member here that lost their pup to parvo...and they had also done all of the right things.
Makes me wonder if there is some new super strain of the parvo disease??

Please do a search on Parvaid and get some into your pup ASAP...there have been many people that have saved their pups using Parvaid. They will overnight it to your home or to the vet's office. Parvaid helps to heal the lining of the intestines that are completely sloughed off with parvo. The faster the intestines heal, the faster the puppy can start eating and feeling better.

I wish you and your pup the best.

Gina

Re: Parvo 13 week old pup

Our vet just called at 8:00pm and Rocco received a blood transfusion this afternoon. He said as of right now he was in his cage standing up and licking everything. He is still getting Tamiflu and Keflex. He said that he is responding well and that he will do anything to beat it. I don't know if I am allowed to say his name but he is in Randolph, NY we drive quite a way to see him and would fly if we had to. Hopefully, he will make a full recovery soon. Has anyone had a dog go through a transfusion. I don't know what it entails. Thank You.

Re: Parvo 13 week old pup

I used Parvaid when Delilah's pups had Corona virus, which is very similar to Parvo. Look at their website...they will even give you a list of ingredients which you can buy locally, and mix to make a weak version of Parvaid until your order arrives.
This stuff makes a big difference IMHO. Immediate treatment is IMPERATIVE. Best wishes.

Re: Parvo 13 week old pup

I have known a pup who had parvo, 1 of which contracted it from the liter itself. See if any of his liter mates have it also. The pup I knew Rommel was in the hospital in IV and fought and he won his battle. This was 10 years ago, I am sure thre are more improvements to meds and acording tothe severity of the parvo. All I can say is my prayers are with you and Rocco and if he can beat it he will. They are very strong willed dogs. My Rottie who passed had a immune disease for 3 years and fought to stay with us. God Bless! D. Ervin

I am praying for your pup. Parvo is just awful. Our pup did have a transfusion but it was too late. So many dogs win their fight with parvo and live happy healthy lives. You will be in my prayers...please let us know how he is doing.

Re: Parvo 13 week old pup

Please let us know how Zeus is doing. Parvo is a terrible thing, but many pups do recover, my Chase had it as a pup and is now 5 years old.

Your in my prayers, during this stressful time.

Cool Re: Parvo 13 week old pup

Rocco is finally home! He was released on Wednesday around lunch time. After giving him a bath when we first got home I fed him a small amout of his Wellness pup food. His first BM was very loose and like black tar. We feed him about 10 small meals a day. By Thursday morning everything was solid. It is an Olympic event trying to chase around a puppy to catch his droppings before they hit the ground. We have bleached everything!! We are glad to have him home. Does anyone know if there are any long term side effects associated with parvo. Our vet's office said the quicker he is off of the meds the less chance for permanent damage. Does anyone else have any other experiences? Thank You for everybody's support!!

If you want to search the forums more thoroughly, the search term I used was "parvo."
