Talking HELP! my 3 month old puppy is limping

My puppy Scooter, is limping. He fights rather rough with our other dog, and were not sure its from that, or if he has HD, or something. Hes not always limping. Sometimes hes fine, and walks on it normal, its usually just after hes been lying down he limps. Hes going to the vet this week doe a check-up. Anyone elses dog do this, were hoping its not hd, as we dont have the money for surgery. but i think his health gaurantee covers it.

Post Re: HELP! my 3 month old puppy is limping

I would stop the rough playing with the other dog...not good for a young puppy.
Is he limping from the back legs or the front? From the front legs it could be pano...also called "growing pains". If the pup is eating puppy food, get the pup on a high quality super premium adult food.

If it's limping from the back legs and stiff when getting up, it could be the first signs of hip dysplasia...or just muscle stiffness from the rough play, etc.

Glad that you are having it checked out.

Did your pup's sire and dam both have their OFA's done? What kind of guarantee did you get on your pup. After you get the pup checked out at the vets, I would give the breeder a call and report any problems or concerns that you are having with the pup.

Re: HELP! my 3 month old puppy is limping

I most deffinitly am calling the breeder, hes limping from the back legs, thats why we think it might be his hips, im not sure about the sire and dam, as my father got him for me, but I will get that checked. the papers are in the mail, and I'm pretty sure he has a hip, and eye guarantee.

Re: HELP! my 3 month old puppy is limping

Baby puppies are pretty darn resilient, but they are not unbreakable. I second Brunie's mom's advice to stop rough play between a puppy and a dog that is much bigger and stronger. They CAN get hurt.

Anything like this should be reported to her breeder.

Re: HELP! my 3 month old puppy is limping

our puppy now is basicly the size of the dog. hes grown really quick. Ive recently been reducing rough play, and play with him myself, without the other dog, we have talked to the breeder, and were just waiting to get him into the vet.

thanks for the reply

He should NOT be growing really quick! It's the worst thing for a Rottweiler puppy...I learned that lesson with my first Rottweiler Bruno. He was diagnosed with HD at 9 months, but I knew something was wrong way before that.

I highly doubt that your pup comes from a good breeder if your Dad was the one that got him. I can't think of a COE breeder that would have sold him a pup, and then have the pup given to you.
What are sire and dams registered names? You can look up their names in the OFA data base www.offa.org

Fingers crossed that it's just muscle pain.

Re: HELP! my 3 month old puppy is limping

Cease the play with the older dogs. He is still small and quite fragile (cannot take knocking around like dogs do) at this age.

Have him checked out fully by the veterinarian - xrays and the whole sheh-bang. Please make sure he has not broken anything! If this were my pup, I'd not wait for the regular appointment, I'd get him in ASAP.

I've had too many friends who's pups ended up with terrible injuries (broken shoulders, dislocated joints, etc...) because the young pup was allowed to rough house with older dogs. I simply won't do it anymore. I don't need the vet bills, and my dogs don't need injuries.

In our home, pups are kept on leash around the older dogs - for safety and for behavior shaping (manners).

It wasn't until our boy was nearly 7 mos of age that we allowed him free range with any of our other dogs - and that's with The Pooh - our antique model, who's life is in slow motion these days. It's too easy for injuries to occur - and I can't turn back time. As he grows older and his body has finished growing, he will be allowed to run with some of the others.

I hope everything's all right with your babe. Let us know what your veterinarian says.

i dont think its a registered breeder. my dad had got the pup for my family as a surprise, were going to the vet wednesday, scooter seems better now that hes not playing rough, hes not growing to quick, but hes growing, i think hes a little older then three months, maybe four, I know the papers are in the mail.

Post Re: HELP! my 3 month old puppy is limping

Glad to hear that it is just muscle pain.
What are you feeding your pup? If he has growing pains (pano), you must get him off of puppy food and onto a good adult food, or All-Life -Stages food such as Canidae or Innova or Wellness, Natural Balance,Timberwolf Organics, etc.

Since your pup comes from a BYB, you may have problems in the future with health problems. I would be worried about hips and heart...both huge problems in the rottie breed.
Hopefully you have your pup enrolled in Puppy K classes, and keep on taking him to training for the next year or so also.

Re: HELP! my 3 month old puppy is limping

Glad to hear!
If you are feeding Medical or Hills, you would be better off feeding one of the foods I suggested. Medical is overpriced mid quality food....that the vet's here in Canada push
