| How long can a dog go without peeing? Before things get toxic? How much can an adult male hold in his bladder safely?

| Re: How long can a dog go without peeing? i know in cats when they are blocked, it's an emergency. the faster they are unblocked or relieved, the better. knowing what is going on with duncan, i would consider hospitalizing him, putting him on IV fluids/antibiotics and leaving a catheter in him until results or swelling goes down and he can control it again.

| Re: How long can a dog go without peeing? Duncan is having a very hard time peeing. He was constantly trying to go, even in the house. We took him to the e-clinic where they put a cath in his bladder and got out about a liter of urine. He is on pred, but I don't think it is helping with the swelling, allowing him to pee. The discharge instructions said to visit his regular vet on Monday. That might be hard to do since her answering machine says that she won't be back until Tuesday as she has been on vacation. I am going to have to tell my vet that she can not ever go on vacation because when she does, one of my dogs goes into crisis. Anyway, I can't imagine a dog going 36+ hours without having to empty his bladder. He is not drinking excessively, but is drinking. I know he normally drinks about a 1/2 gallon a day. I am thinking that we will need to take him back to the e-clinic to get drained again tonight.

| Re: How long can a dog go without peeing? if there is anyway you can hospitalize him so they can put and keep a catheter in him to keep it open and emptying while getting fluids, it would be the best possible senario for him. just emptying him and wait, only irritates it more-the constant in and out and wait. find out. tuesday is too long. he needs help now if he hasn't since yesterday.

| Re: How long can a dog go without peeing? a normal healthy dog? about 24 hours maximum A dog taking pred?? hours at most. I agree he needs to get catheterised and hospitalised until the swelling goes down enough for him to urinate otherwise he is risking illness or burst bladder The only other alternate I see is sending him to the bridge and only YOU and HE will know when it is time for that.

| Re: How long can a dog go without peeing? AGREE! I would just take him for draining. Either by hospitalizing him or by going twice a day. The hospitalizing will be easier on "his parts" than the repeated re cathing, but that's a decision not for me He sounds like a wonderful grand guy. I KNOW you will do what is best Continued good wishes

| Re: How long can a dog go without peeing? I would say to you not much longer then 24 hours. You may want to contact yur vet and see if you could give him a hgh dose of predisone to help him go. I had to do that with one of my Rotts years back and I was told to give him 4 predisones 20mgs each he weighed 130lbs. and I put a pee pee pad under him(at the time he was having issues walking) and he did pee about a hour later. Ask your vet first. Good Luck |

| Re: How long can a dog go without peeing? I took Duncan to the vet hospital to be admitted at noon. All he wanted to do was pee. I don't want to risk kidney damage. I had hoped that my vet would be back this afternoon, but she isn't. Her assistant is wonderful and I have kept her informed of what was going on with Duncan. Since I wasn't going to be able to depend on my vet, I went down to the vet practice that he was at last week. He is still the happy camper this morning, he just needed to pee and couldn't. His prostate is so enlarged it is pinching off his plumbing so he can't go without being cath'd. Tomorrow isn't coming soon enough, I can tell you that.
