Wormers?

Does anyone know of any wormers that will get EVERY kind of worm?
I was told by the vet that Dontal or Dontral is the only one.
As most of you know we had one bad weekend with Dodge. Someone left the gate open Friday evening and he went running for 45 minutes, I am sure he was out deer hunting. Then on Sunday, he ate about 3/4 of a stick of butter, paper and all off the counter. I called the vet today and told him that Dodge has mushy poo, and told him about our weekend. He suggested that we do another round of flagyl, because he probably ate deer poop wherever he went and it would not hurt to worm him again either. Tonight the hubby went to pick up poo and said something in it moved. GROSS!!!! So off to the vet I go tomorrow to pick up more wormer and flagyl. That one we used the first time was REALLY expensive. Like almost 70 bucks. Of course if that is what works, we will use it. I am so mad, I did not leave open the gate, and I did not leave the butter on the counter, yet it's MY dog LOL. As everyone else in the house tells everyone how awesome THEIR dog is. Oh well just wondering if you had any other ideas on the meds. I sometimes think they are just selling me the priciest stuff cuz I don't know any better. Like when they tried to push the prescription diet on me.

Re: Wormers?

Was it the wormer or the flagyl or both together that cost 70 bucks? Your bill should spell it out. I don't think Drontal is THAT expensive but I have found that any medication for dogs seems to cost more than for humans, we had bear on a course of antibiotics...40$ for 2 weeks for what might have cost 12$ in a human pharmacy....maybe it costs more at the vet because they don't order such large quantaties as the chain pharmacies???

Re: Wormers?

We originally used Drontal for Static when he was a pup - we now use Advocate for heart worm, fleas and intestinal worms.
I don't think the Drontal should be that expensive by itself. To worm Static now it would cost around AU$25, which would be about US$22 converted. So I wouldn't think it should cost more than US$30 at the most - and that is adding a bit!
Drontal is pretty good though. I just find it easier to apply the Advocate and not worry about anything. (I'm thinking of changing to a chew though - getting paranoid that he's not getting enough of the solution on his skin to work)

Re: Wormers?

Yes it was the Drontal plus that cost me 68 bucks. He gave me three of the extra large dog tablets, and said 1 and 1/2 now and repeat in 2 weeks.
The dog's tests came out negative at that time but he was brand new here, so we did it anyhow. Probably did not need to, but NOW we do.
In other countries there is probably a generic for it, but here in the USA our government lets drug companies hold their patents forever.
I am going to look up Advocate. If there were a preventative for all intestinal worms that would be great, but I believe my heartguard (heartworm stuff) only covers one kind of intestinal worms.

Thanks again from the soon to be broke,

Sharon

Re: Wormers?

I found something mmoving in my dogs poop before, but it was 4 day old poop. Is this fresh, or a few days old when you husband picked it up? If its a few days old, it could just be fly eggs hatching. Yep, flies come from poo basically. THe eggs are laid there, turn to larvae and hatch. Have you ever noticed crumbly poop with some holes? THose are the ones where flies incubated. Gross eh!! HEy, but its good to know.

Re: Wormers?

Nope,
Poop doesn't stay around for a few days at our house, it is picked up at least once a day and sometimes twice if I am outside the first time he poos.
So It wasn't the fly eggs hatching. That is disgusting.
We just did the dontral pills and will repeat in two weeks. If anyone ever lets my dog out again, they are gonna not be happy, assuming they live.
Yes it is 69 bucks for three large tablets, that's enough to worm him twice. Pretty pricey stuff.

Re: Wormers?

you could always try ordering over the net - you may find that you can purchase the Drontal A LOT cheaper.
I use a site called vetnpetdirect.com.
they ship to the WHOLE WORLD! anyway, they have Drontal, and the prices are as reasonable as I've seen. You may find that you can find someone other than your vet to sell it to you - as you seem to be being royally ripped off!

Re: Wormers?

drontal plus has no generic yet. drontal alone-yes(praziquantel).
it is expensive. a bottle of 50 tabs is well over....it's expensive. i think 68 for 3 tabs is alot. we charge about 30-40 for that here. it kills tapes, rounds, hooks, whips.
my favorite one though, is panacur. made by intervet. you do it for 3 days and repeat in 2 weeks. safe for pups and pregnant dogs. a bottle is about 100 online and should last a loong time. you can opt for powder and buy by the dose way cheaper.
if your dog is on heartworm prevention such as sentinel or interceptor, it takes care of controlling most parasites except tapes...but you get tapes mostly thru the ingestion of a carrier flea.

regarding your moving poop... could it have been a dung beetle? they move quick in rolling the logs, so to speak!
but, your best bet when you suspect worms, get a fecal exam to know which you are battling...if a worm at all.

if the poop is still soft- do keep in mind your dog counter surfed and ate a stick of butter! imodium tablet twice a day until firmer helps.
