Talking picking a new vet

how do you go about choosing a new vet? are there any tips and information that I should have to go about interviewing a new vet and determining if they are any good?

Re: picking a new vet

I have thought about this as my SO is in thge military and we will likely move in the next few years.

I like a vet that isn't too pusy with the drugs, believes in holisitic medicine (complimentary therapies) and most of all gets down on the floor, doesn't ming dog hair or wet slobbery kisses. I also need a vet that has some experience with sport dogs. I know here that there's the regular vets and then "the vet" who actually has a masters in zoology in addition to his DVM who seems to be a little more on top of things. At the clinic where he works, sport people go to this guy and the rest the other guy...you wouldn't know the difference if nobody told you until you actually got there.

When we move, my plan is to get in touch with a flyball or agility club before hand and once I have met some people, ask aound about who they use and how the vet is - especially with larget dogs.

Re: picking a new vet

When we were choosing a vet fot Lola, I stopped every person with a dog and asked what vet they used. I asked in the pet shops and at the animal shelter. There were several but, the people who mentioned the one we use now, all smiled when they spoke about him Their eyes just lit up with excitement. I went in to interview him with out Lola. He gave me all the time I needed and answered every question. At Lola's first visit, he held her the whole time. Kissed her and just loved her. To this day, he greets her on the floor with open arms and she just loves him. He is a Cornell grad and also studied all over the world before opening his practice. He is a vegetarian which impressed me immediately. He saw great potential in one of his staff members and helped pay for her vet school. The guy is a gem, we really lucked out with him.
