Why do we eat our poop?

I've got a 9 mth old male that was sick recently. He ate something that didn't agree with him resulting in some vomiting & explosive diarreah (not a pretty sight) that lasted 24 hrs. We gave him some pedialite (thanks for the suggestion) and no fpood for 24 hrs and he's pretty much back to normal. He's generally of a poop eater anymore (did a course of Forbid when he was younger) but I noticed this morning he was eating the diarreah. I know it's gross but does anyone have any idea why? I've since cleaned the yard to remove the temptation. I'm just curious. Thanks
