Losing fur

I have a 2 year old female that just recently started losing her fur. She has bald spots all over her and her skin is now scabbing and is really dry. DO you have any idea what this can be and how I can help her fur grow back? My 3 year old male does not have this problem. Can it have anything to do with her having puppies 8 weeks ago. I dont think it does because it just started and she hasnt had anything to do with caring for the puppies for over 4 weeks now. But I dont know i am not the expert. Can you help me please?

Re: Losing fur

Yes, it could have to do with her having puppies recently, but to play it safe, you should take her to the vet and make sure she doesn't have worms.

Post Re: Losing fur

There could alot of reasons for her to lose her fur. It could be hormonal, it could be parasites (mange), it could diet, it could thyroid, etc?
Please take her into the vet and have this checked out.

What food are you feeding her?

Re: Losing fur

I would definately take her to the vet asap. If it is a thyroid problem or mange, it is a lot easier to treat before it gets to bad. How cute are those puppies? I bet you are having a blast with them. Did you find good homes for all of them already?

Re: Losing fur

My dog is showing the same symptoms at the moment. His skin is dry, he is scratching a lot and now is losing fur and has a few bald spots. These same symptoms presented at the same time last year so my vet thinks it is some type of seasonal allergy. We are giving him benadryl at the moment with little relief so we will be getting him to the vet in the next couple of days to hopefully figure out exactly what it is.

Re: Losing fur

You should really get her in to the vet. There's something going on that needs medical intervention.

Here's what recently happened to Samson. In mid-May I noticed his eye looked irritated. I took him to the vet and since he's 2 years old she thought it was conjunctivitis instead of mange. She prescribed him a week's worth of antibiotics and eye ointment.

The eye started looking better, but within 48 hours of finishing the antibiotics his eye was red and itchy again. I took him back to the vet and she said he looked like a demodectic mange dog now. She took a skin scraping, but nothing showed up under the microscope.

Since it was just one spot she said there wasn't a treatment protocol recommended since his immune system should be able to fight it off. However, another vet came in and recommended giving him low dose steroids. Today was the last dose of steroids for Samson and he finished up a second round of antibiotics last Thursday.

I think his flare-up was stress-related because in mid-May there was a lot going on.
