anal gland bleeding AGAIN!

Ugh. As of Sunday the gland (which Amber had torn last Tuesday) had healed up to the point where I couldn't even find the wound any more. So I let her go pantless Wednesday night & yesterday I noticed blood again. She hadn't been having any discharge at all, I've been giving her bran with her food & she's definitely been pooping regularly.

Back to compresses, animax & dog pants. Today is her last day of Clavamox but she still has a few more alternate days of prednisone. Her follow up visit is supposed to be Tuesday but I may change it to Monday (or tomorrow). Could this be an indication that she needs a stronger antibiotic? There is absolutely no odor from the blood/discharge, no unusal warmth to the afflicted area.

Amber is fed Canidae and has never had anything like this happen in the nearly 5 years we've had her.

Help?

Nina

Re: anal gland bleeding AGAIN!

I think once you can get the wound to heal, it will become more manageable. Do you think fasting her for a day or so to give a chance to heal might help?

Re: anal gland bleeding AGAIN!

Sabina- the frustrating thing is that as of last weekend it looked like the wound had healed. No discharge, no evidence of blood, even her "pants" would be bone dry & stain free. So I don't know if Amber tore them again or if this is the same infection, resistant to the clavamox.

Prior to the clavamox she had been taking a different antibiotic for her torn off toenail. The vet wanted to complete that course of antibiotics before starting her on the Clavamox (apparantly the simplicef that she was taking for her toe wouldn't be as good as the clavamox for her anal gland).

Poor girl.

Re: anal gland bleeding AGAIN!

I would try using wild oregano capsules (or if the have oil of oregano in capsule like form). Not only is it an anti-microbial, it fights infection when taken orally. I would give one 3-4x/day. OR, you can keep trying with different antibiotics the vet prescribes. Remember the more she takes these antibiotics, the more her body becomes immune to them, so when she is in dire need for them, they may not work. Check with your vet if you choose to give oil of oregano with the antibiotics.

Re: anal gland bleeding AGAIN!

Just a follow up. Amber went back to the vet last week. Gland was impacted again & infection was still there. The Vet explained that it's difficult to get the anitbotics "into" the anal gland (kind of like tying to treat the prostate) so she's now on a stronger antibiotic 3x per day for 2 weeks. Fingers crossed as it's been nearly a week since she started this stuff and it looks like the seeping is gone. She's hardly licking the area & has been lounging around the house pantsless for the past few days. I've been giving her bran flakes (for the fiber) and plain yogurt (to offset the potential for antibiotic induced diarhea) and things seem to be going well. We go for yet another follow up later this week. Fingers crossed that this is the end of it.

There's nothing more pathetic than a dog in pants!

Re: anal gland bleeding AGAIN!

At least Amber had dignified denim pants. My daughter's JRT had pink plaid cotton pants with butt ruffles! Fortunately she never got a rear view of herself, or she'd had bitten somebody for sure. I'm glad Amber is getting better.

Oh if you could have seen the martyred expression to go along with the pants! And the diaper clad nub frantically wiggling it's way through the tail hole . We kept calling them her poom poom shorts.

Much to my horror I spotted dog "party dresses" in Target today so Amber should be thankful all she had to deal with was pants!

Thanks for the good wishes.
