Appropriate age to neuter

Hi there,
I have a nine month old rottie. He's my first, and so far, he won't be my last, I love this dog. I do not plan on breeding him and want to get him neutered. I'm just not sure what age to do that. My vet recommended 6-8 months, but a lot of breeder contracts say to wait until after 12-18 months. He is not aggressive. He is a bit on the slender side, he always has been, I think he was the runt. I thought if I waited until he's older, he might fill out. However, I don't want him to get any bright ideas this spring/summer when he smells a female in heat. Any suggestions?

Re: Appropriate age to neuter

A very reputable COE breeder I had spoken with about male puppies says to wait until after 18 months to neuter - she says it's because the testosterone will help them fill out and get the wider chest and whatnot...not sure what others will say.

What does it say in your contract? I don't see a problem in getting him done now if it doesn't state you have to wait in your contract.

The problem is that it's not in the pups best interest health-wise to neuter him so early.www.showdogsupersite.com/kenlclub/breedvet/castrationindogs.html

Re: Appropriate age to neuter

i would wait until her was maybe a year old - two years. if he doesnt develope any problems that would require him to be neutered.

i think it help the dog mentally and physically if the dog can mature nturlly then be neutered
