Callous like growth

Clyde just turned 11 months old, and he has a callous like growth on his right elbow, which looks like a callous an older dog would have from lying around on concrete or other hard surfaces. He favors his right front leg occasionally, and the callous is uncomfortable to touch, but not truly painful, judging from his reaction to manipulating it. Since he is a puppy, and doesn't spend time on hard floors or the ground, what could cause this? I think I already know the answer, but I need someone else to validate my concerns before we go to the vet....
Furthermore, if I am right in my thoughts, and if any of you have an idea what this could be,(you know what I am talking about) is there any treatment???

If you'e worried about melanoma - there is such thing as a *hairy melanoma* that occurs on a part of the body normally covered with hair. These are usually benign.

Thanks, Nancy!! I didn't want to say that bad "C" word! Clyde gets to go to the doctor next week (checkup on his infection from the foxtail he swallowed), but I thought perhaps he should go sooner, if this callous-y growth could be malignant. I feel better!!
