| HI Debbie,
I would be very careful with this.It could be the begginning of a urinary tract infection. A UT infection can actually lead to a blockage or kidney failure wich is potentially lethal, without quick treatment.
The treatment however is very simple, at extreme instances a catheter will have to be placed to relieve the preasure then further treatment with antibiotics. I am surprized that your vet didnt tell you to at least bring him in for a check. You can never be too careful about this type of problem.
Your vet can even at the begginning stages check for this with a simple urinealysis. They will look for crystals in the urine, these crystals are actually interesting to see under the microscope they actually look like tiny crystals with sharp points, those points are what causes discomfort. The infection in the urine tract is what causes the urine to crystalize.
I have not had this problem with any of my dogs, but I do have a neutered cat that had them continually, until I changed his diet.
The UT infection would be the same senario with either animal, I would think.
Best not to take any chances, and get your boy checked. Better to be safe than sorry and the UT infection is very painful if it leads to blockage. You should have seen my poor cat, I felt soo bad for him. He was already to the blockage stage when I became aware of the problem. He would sit in the litter box and strain, when he started yowling is when I realized something was wrong. Turned out fine though. Catheter put in place to relieve the full bladder, a antibiotic injection, and followed with the pink stuff liquid and changed his diet to Science diet CD specially made for urinary tract problems. Im shure there is something simmilar for dogs.
Good Luck, Let us know how it goes.
