ITCHING NEAR TAIL DOCK

Sammy is having an itching problem our little guy weighed in at 42lbs last monday, and our vet had us complete his transfer to adult dog food, we had been weaning him for 3 weeks. She felt it was neccessary because he seemed a bit round to her, she also cut him back to 5 and 1/2 cups food as opposed to the 8 cups he would eat during the timed feedings we give him. But, to the point he has been very itchy around his nub (tail), and hind leg area, she checked for fleas when we were there. Is it possible he is having a food allergy, he is on Eukanuba large breed dog food, not lamb and rice.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, I hate seeing him so itchy.

Thanks,

Hi MJ,

Well if it isn't fleas, then I would definately suspect a allergy to his food. I thought you were feeding RAWFAB?

Donna & Frontier,

I was interested in what RAWFAB was, I had not heard of it, still dont know what it is, they changed his food a few times originally it was IAMs, then Nutro, Ended up at 11 weeks with Eukanuba puppy large breed, and 2 weeks later she(vet) started to change him to adult Eukanuba dult food. He had the runs with first ones, so she switched (a little quick on the change overs for my taste) Sam is doing great his coat is beautiful, his skin is a bit flaky but she said not anymore then most puppies, she put him on adult earlier because she feels he is growing to fast, I just want him to be healthy, any suggestions would be great. Also, this may sound strange, but I changed laundry detergents, and I wash his blanket alot could that do it?

What is the RAWFAB anyway, I saw alot of posts about it, but never really got alot of information.

Hi MJ,

Perhaps I have confused you with someone else. I got a email from a MJ from this board on June 7th telling me she fed her dog RAWFAB and wanted info on a list for people with rotts who feed this diet. RAWFAB stands for Raw Food and Bones.

My rotti Chewy had itching at the base of his tail and dry skin. I was told by the vet to put about a tablespoon of Vegetable oil over his dry food and it would help with the dry skin. It did help some. I also starting giving him baths in shampoo with tea tree oil. His skin and coat both look great now.

Flax seed oil is also excellent for coat and itching. It's a bit more pricey then veg oil but the results are really outstanding. You can get it in a health food store.

Carol - How much flax seed oil do you use for an adult, per day. I use the freshly ground flax seeds for myself about 1/2 TB over a salad or in a shake -- have you ever tried the ground flax with your rott instead of the pressed oil?

My pup also itches on her rear. After an exam to rule out fleas, etc. my vet prescibed 3V Caps from DVM Pharmaceuticals which contain fish oil, cod liver oil, etc. It has completely relieved her itching and has made her coat even more shiny than usual. They aren't too expensive and you only have to give your pup one a day so they are easy to administer. I recently ran out and haven't made it back to the vet and my dog is itching like crazy again. Just proof that they are working....

As you sure that you are not bathing your dog too much? Diesel was itching alot also, took him to the vet and the vet told me not to bath him so much. I've got it down to every two weeks and that has helped out alot! If it is not the bathing, I would suggest the oil on the food! What have you got to lose?
