Yelping quandry

Kinder, my 6 1/2 year old rott, yelped a handful of times today. She's walking normally and is eating and drinking. She was able to pee and poop. When she yelps, I try to see what happened, but I seem to miss it. At first I thought it was one of the paws, but I was able to touch and massage them without her yelping. I was able to move all limbs without a single yelp. I moved her stub to see if that cause her yelping. Nope. Any ideas?

Re: Yelping quandry

something must hurt. might be her back as she shifts around.
if the yelping happens again, and you haven't located the reason, have your vet do a complete exam and possibly xray.

Re: Yelping quandry

Ok, Kinder moved from lying on her side to a basic lay position and let out a little yelp. I guess the back may be the cause. Should I give her a human pain killer or take her to the vet in the morning?

Re: Yelping quandry

I narrowed it down to Kinder's mouth area. She wasn't chewing on her favorite toy, a stuffed hedgehog, for awhile. I gave her a dried up chicken strip and she yelped a couple of times while chewing on it. No blood on the teeth. Maybe it's her jaw?

Re: Yelping quandry

I think it would be best to get her to a vet so they can locate the exact problem and prescribe the correct medication. If you give pain medication you will only cover up the problem, but not fix it.

Re: Yelping quandry

I agree with not giving any kind of pain meds until your dog has seen a vet for a proper diagnosis. First of all, you don't know what your treating, and secondly you may effectively hide the problem, making it much more difficult for the vet to ferret out the problem.

Have you taken a good look in her mouth? She may have an abcessed tooth, a broken tooth, something stuck in her teeth or gums......it could be any numbr of things. Best thing to do is have a vet check her out.

Re: Yelping quandry

it can be just about anything...her neck/back/tooth...take her in to see vet, have them do a full physical and possibly xrays.
let us know how it goes.

Re: Yelping quandry

I called the vet on base and they said the soonest they can see Kinder was Friday! I ended up taking Kinder to a vet off base. They told me to come back at 1600 (4pm) b/c that's the soonest the English speaking vet will become available. They were kinda peeved at me b/c I didn't make an appointment before I came in. Note: I called 4 times in the morning and was told to call back b/c the English speaking person was busy. Anyways, I came back at my appointed time and Kinder was looked at and wouldn't you know, she didn't yelp once! The vet looked her over and even managed to get a good long look into her mouth. I was very proud of Kinder b/c she didn't growl or bark. The vet said that it is common for a dog to cure at the vet. He gave me medicine for inflammation and antibiotics for 3 days and told me to come back if there is no improvement. I will say that the vet clinic off base was a lot nicer than the one on base! The visit and medicine cost me 2,310 Yen (roughly $20).
