| My 8month old rotti girl is having trouble with her left hind hip, it started a couple of days ago, she was in the back yard, and yelped and was looking at her hind leg. I checked it out to see if she had stepped on something, all seemed to be okay, she did the same thing at the dog park 2 days later. Checked again, no tenderness, swelling, sore spot, cut, or puncture. I have recently recovered from a surgery myself and am getting back into training, and running with the dog. Normally we started out doing 2 miles a day, and last night moved it up to 3. She seemed to be in pain last night and had trouble walking... today when she tried to lay down on the floor she yelped again everytime she lay down. Help? any advice? I'm calling the vet to see what i should do? should i x ray? |

| Re: Hip injury? Not to be obvious but you need to stop the running and excess excersize with her until the vet looks at her. As far as x-rays, again, if you trust your vet wait and get their opinion before you make any suggestions. Sorry I can't be more helpful! I know how scary it is when they hurt! |

| Re: Hip injury? I do not trust my vet and that is one of the problems i am having, the first time she showed signs of pain (yelping in the back yard) i called the vet, he said she should be fine, and it wasn't a problem for her to be running. So following his advice- i kept running with her to help "stretch her out". Its become more than " soreness" and I'm too the point of switching vets. I don't want to call up the vet that has been seeing her and ask because i do not trust his opinion on X rays, i'm a large animal vet tech- but my knowlegde on dogs is limited. One of my co workers made a recommendation of another vet (that she trusts) so I'm getting an apt with them. Thanks for your help! |

| Re: Hip injury? First red flag for me is the fact that you are running such an incredibly young dog. Why? Rottweilers are a large breed, large bone and joints and should NOT be made to strenous exercise until they are at a minimum of 18 months old. You need to get her xrayed, although it may not show much right now as far as calcification. It will tell you how the hip sockets are formed. I have a feeling she is being over exercised, that is my opinion. Take her to the vet and see what is going on inside of her and take her for walks, not runs. Kristi

| I agree...you should not be running miles with an 8 month old pup. When a pup/dog is sore you should always let them rest to see if the injury will get better.....not make the poor dog run even more. It could be her hips? It could be pano? It could be a torn ACL? I suggest you take her to a good vet and have her x-rayed. If she is still not spayed ,have her x-rayed and spayed at the same time. Gina

| Re: Hip injury? Took bella to the vet last night, new vet that was great. she is 11 months old ( i get my ages mixed up ) she has a form of hip dysplasia, and her hips dislocted/slide in and out of the joint. We are trying steriods and anti inflamitories, next step is surgery. I'm not quite sure how i will afford that one. Has anyone had their dog get both hips replaced, is there quality of life after restricted much? Thank you all for your help. |
