| Cruciate Ligament Repair
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this surgery? I have a l 1/2 year old Rottie I have started in SchH. training and now she has torn her cruciate ligament I wanted to know if this would put an end to her training the vets told me she would be as good as new with enough time off and rest. ------------------ Terri Vollertsen |

| It depends upon how it is repaired and if you follow the directions to the letter and work up to exercise slowly. Plan on about a year before any training other than obedience (no jumps) or tracking . Possibly longer. Keeping her slim will help immensly You can also add glucosomine and glycoflex to her diet to aid in joint protection and rebuilding My mom's bitch had surgery in March and has just started being able to trot and canter a little again. | Reba, And get a SECOND opinion! My vet, whom I trusted 100 %, said she had a torn cruciate ligament. So, we set up the time etc everything for the $2000.00 surgery. By chance I ran into a rotti guy at the dog park & he said it didn't seem right. He urged me to get a second opinion. I did. Turns out, she didn't need the surgery & she didn't have a torn ligament. She had a bruised hip from what? I haven't a clue, maybe slammed into the fence chasing the squirrels? It happened before! Prey drive? Could be, some one here told me about that awhile back. Shes a real clutz at times. I'm not sure how this vet erred but I do know he was instantly hostile when I confronted him. I did report it but I've heard nothing & hes still in business. My dog is 100 %. I wonder just what he would have done to her considering there was nothing to really repair. I still get mad when I think about it & its been two years. Ofcourse, I was a novice then, still am so likely you'll know alot more than I did!! | Janni ripped one cruciate when she was a little over a year old (was with previous owner, got her foot stuck in the crate while spinning around). She had the surgery, went back to work too soon and tore the other cruciate. When we got her she was four years old and hadn't been worked in over a year or so. She went right back to work after a vet check and has never had a problem since. She's eight years old now and she comes to SchH training to do protection so that the young dogs have someone to watch ![]() Liz ------------------ www.inxpress.net/~harkon/ harkon@inxpress.net [This message has been edited by Liz (edited April 17, 1999).] |
