Unhappy Whip worms & Hook worms what a mess

Hi,
This past summer my rottie was diagnosed with whip and hook worms, we also have 3 other dogs that potty in the same area, I have no idea where riddik my rottie got such nasty things. The other 3 dogs never got them. Riddik was on panacure for 2 weeks and they were finally gone! All the dogs have been on Interceptor for the last year, and so far no reinfestation, thank god! What I don't understand is how in the heck did riddik get them from and the vet doesn't either. I will continue to keep them on interceptor and periodically and see what happens, we can't afford to move and we rent so we can't replace the yard, I will just wait to see what happens, I know the one thing that this has done to riddik from the worms, he has a very sensitive stomach and pukes alot, the vet put him on some antibiotics so when his tummy problems flare up. Its a nightmare, we just wanted a healthy dog, but it looks like he will have problems now the rest of his life due to these dang worms! Has anyone else expenienced this?

Re: Whip worms & Hook worms what a mess

I was told the whipworms can stay in moist soil, also my vet said some dogs get them from old water, Gypsy got them this past summer and it was bad, none of my other dogs did, she got them from the dog park I beleive, I use heartguard for her heartworm prevention and even though they dont always say it prevents whipworms the company paid for my office visit, medication, and xrays... If you clean up daily and use a bleach on the area where they go it should cure the problem. thats what I was told to do and never had a reacurrance, Also my vet said whipworms are rare in adult dogs!!

Im in Michigan as well where abouts are you?

Re: Whip worms & Hook worms what a mess

interceptor is supposed to control whipworms, and one species of hooks.
they can pick up parasites from parks, dog shows, camping, etc.
that is why it is recommended to do frequent parasite checks on dogs that go out alot.
all you can do is keep clean at home and yard, give interceptor monthly, and check for worms 2-3 times a year.

Re: Whip worms & Hook worms what a mess

A couple of weeks ago I brought in a stool sample when Cipher had a vet appointment for some blood test. She hadn't shown any signs of anything but good health.
Much to my vet's surprise, she found a single whipworm. My vet hadn't seen a whipworm since vet school in the 80's. She doesn't even keep pancur on the shelf because it goes bad before it gets used. So all three of my dogs got dronstal<sp?> because they potty in the same area.
My vet figured that she got it in Canada or points in between earlier this year. I asked about treating the yard. She said that there really wasn't anything I could use that would actually work and not be a possible problem for the dogs. She said that dry ground and sun will kill it.

Re: Whip worms & Hook worms what a mess

drontal plus kills most worms including tapes and whips.
we use panacur mostly...and it flies off the shelf! guess moist and humid miami is a worm haven too! we see hooks daily and whips every month or so we will get a positive sample or two.
there really is no treatment for the yard, except clean up the poop.
and get regular fecal checks to monitor parasites.
