Hello Everyone, diagnosed with hip/elbow dysplasia

This is my first post but i have been reading the forums etc so a quick hello to you all.
We've got a beautiful 9 month old rotty called Murphy who sadly got diagnosed with elbow and hip displacia today. We're devastated for the little chap. just wanted to tell someone thats all. I know he's not the first and unfortuantly won't be the last with this condition.

How sad. What does your breeder say about this? Did you purchase from an ethical breeder that used a contract with health guarantees?

Do a search on here for dysplasia and you can find lots of information on supplements, etc. that will help your pup. Being diagnosed this early in life can be tough but there are things (and surgery) that can be done to help him have a relatively pain-free life.

Re: Hello Everyone, diagnosed with hip/elbow dysplasia

I am a bit cynical. I have had vets diagnose my dogs with serious problems, including two intact males with hip dysplasia. My dogs later received passing ratings from OFA (Othopedic Foundation for Animals). I have learned to not panic(at least not too much) and to get a second opinion from the best specialist I can find. So far, none of my dogs have actually had the issues that the first vet said that they had.
Is your dog showing signs of pain or other difficulties?

Re: Hello Everyone, diagnosed with hip/elbow dysplasia

hi! No not showing signs of pain, only unease when you manipulate the joints. I've looked through a lot of the posts on here, i'm going to order some glucosamine tonight. I looked at the xrays and his hips were pretty bad. Next stage is with an orthopedic specialist so we'll see what he recommends.

Re: Hello Everyone, diagnosed with hip/elbow dysplasia

Hello, Peterbann
I can sympathize with you, my girl was diagnosed at 9 mo as well (hips only at that time). She is now 6, and has advanced arthritis as well as severe dysplasia. She is a recue PM girl, and got the short end of the gene pool stick.
There are some very good treatments out there now, we just had glucosamine back then. Glad to hear you are going to a specialist. I know there is some kind of surgery for dysplasia, that if done young, dogs can live a very normal life. A aquantance of mine had it for her Newfie (paid for by the breeder as he was show quality), and he does agility now!!! Also, Adequan injections have been very helpful, although not cheap.
Greta and I send hugs and good wishes to your pup for a good outcome

Re: Hello Everyone, diagnosed with hip/elbow dysplasia

thats very kind of you thanks! The vet preliminary said £2500 per hip so we are wondering of the alternatives. (thats approx 4600 dollars i think?)

Re: Hello Everyone, diagnosed with hip/elbow dysplasia

Hi Peter, my boy has elbow dysplasia too, luckily, his hips are fine...my breeder was devastated as this was the first in her breeding history...I chose not to go down the road of surgery as my vet told me he is dubious of the benefits, so my lad has monthly injections (he will have this till he is two and then only in winter) and he has glucosamine (glycoflex III) once a day....he is doing well, has almost full extension and never seems to be in pain, loves nothing better than getting free in the fields and having zoomies......at the end of the day you have to do whats right for you..Bracken is 14 months now and was diagnosed at 5 months.....I feel I made the right decison in not having surgery.

best wishes

Lynne

Re: Hello Everyone, diagnosed with hip/elbow dysplasia

hi peter, we also have just been told that our lovely 20mth old rotty girl maggie has fcp in both front elbows, she is booked in to a specialist in Guildford Surrey 13th Feb. She in alot of pain was on Rimadyl, but has been taken off them and put on metacam and some sedatives. We thought we did the checks and that we bought from a proper breeder but we were wrong.. If only they could go through the same pain that my maggie is going through then they would not put other puppies through this!! Leesa
