| Urinary Infection?

Unless there was something in the fertilizer that acts as a diuretic, my guess would be a bladder infection. This will have to be diagnosed & treated by a veterinarian. Nancy ------------------ von Dorow Rottweilers doggo@hotbot.com

Eriko: Take a urine sample with you when you go to the vet. For girls it is easy if you use those disposable aluminum bread loaf pans. When she starts to squat, just slide it under her. She won't know the difference. Then put it in a sealed container and take it to the vet. That will help them with the diagnosis part of it.

My wife took Carlie to the vet and she has a Urinary Tract Infection. They tested for crystals and they didn't find any which was positive. She has a 10 day prescription of amoxicillin that seems to be working already. Thanks for your replies! Any ideas what could cause a UTI? The vet didn't think that it was the food, she did say that it can be heritary but that since she hadn't had the problem earlier that it probably wasn't the case either. She said sometimes these things happen, but I want to make sure I take all the precautions so this doesn't happen again. I don't think my wife could handle seeing her in pain like that. Thanks Erik

It can simply be due to not being allowed out to urinate frequently enough or to not drinking enough liquids. Unfortunately, it is more common in bitches than dogs. The same as in humans . There are natural forms of urinary acidifiers that can help - cranberry tablets, apple cider vinegar in the food, etc.Nancy ------------------ von Dorow Rottweilers doggo@hotbot.com

We use cranberry tablets and they worked much better than amoxicillin. You just have to make sure you give them plenty of water also. And for the urine sample, a laddle works better than a bread pan ![]() ------------------ nick teifke nteifke@dog.com www.angelfire.com/wi/1strottie icq# - 28884141

Thank you all for your reccomendations. Any suggestions on dosage of apple cider vinegar? I think I will try that as I have also read that it is good for flea prevention as well.

Erik, I have seen posted on a few other boards that Nutro has been linked to UTI's in some dogs (one of these posts was from a vet). There is a thread I posted on this topic some time ago when I first read about this. Use the Search function to find it. I can't remember the exact subject, but try using Nutro and UTI in the search line. I feed Nutro myself, and have done, for three years now. My dog does very well on it and has never had a UTI. It is a possibility to consider though, and if it had anything to do with it, your switching to Innova might help. Caroline

I thought we had it kicked. I gave her the 10 days of amoxicillin, she was doing great even just 5 days into the prescription but I finished it off to be safe. I started adding apple cider vinegar to her food 2 out of the three meals she gets a day, approx a teaspoon per feeding. She finished on the prescription on sunday and then tonight she started peeing a ton and licking herself. I knew we had a problem when she went pee in the house, she is very good about going to the door. I called the vet and they prescribed 10 days of cephalexin thinking that the initial infection never completly cleared her system. Does this sound right? Could their physically be something wrong? One thing that I think might be working against me is how well potty trained she is. She sleeps/plays in her crate all night 11pm-7am without whining so she goes the 8 hours without going potty. I thought this was actually a good thing, atleast for my sleep it was but now I am thinking this might be adding to the problem. Any thoughts or suggestion would be greatly appreciated Thanks Erik

When my dog had a UTI, my vet prescribed a 14 day course of Cephalexin. That did the trick. I think it is a broader spectrum antibiotic. When I asked him why she got it in the first place he said that some dogs like people are more prone/susceptible to them, a shorter urethra that would allow bacteria to get to the bladder more easily, or just a random thing that happened. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement. She seems to be doing better, and I am making a point to get up in the middle of the night now even though she is able to hold it. Happy 4th! Erik

Re: Urinary Infection? Hi everyone, I was so excited when my mother found this discussion board! I have an eight month old Rottweiler female named Heidi. Heidi has been having problems with UTI's for about four months. My vet is continuing to put her on the same antibiotics (clavamox). We have had an ultrasound to eliminate the chance of it being bladder stones. We have also had blood work done and all her organs are in check. Here is what has been hapening. She is put on ten days of clavamox and withing two days of finishing her antibiotics shows more signs of a UTI. We are pretty sure this is not a yeast infection due to the fact that the antibiotics are treating her infection. Some suggestions that have been made are switch her to a non comercial food (she is currently on Welness), give her more cranberry than she is already getting, or having a special kind of "plastic" surgury. My vet has pretty much told me that he does not know what is wrong with her or why she is not healing all the way from the antibiotics. All of this started when Heidi was put on a different antibiotic for a rash on her stomach. Come to find out it was most likely those antibiotics that caused her first UTI. At the moment Heidi is also receiving Natures Farmacy's "Dog Bloom VM Supreme" (1 1/2 tablespoons a day), "Dog Zymes Cran-Tri-C"(1/4 teaspoon and breakfast and 1/4 teaspoon on lunch", "Dog Zymes Digestive Enhancer" (1/2 teaspoon three times a day), and she is getting a cranberry tablet once a day. I am at a loss as to what to do. This has been going on for four months! HELP!!! ~Abi~

| Re: Urinary Infection? Hello Abi, IS your 8month old Heidi spayed? When was she spayed? The reason I ask is because my old vet kept telling me that Moka was have constint bladder infections and put her also on Clavamox. I felt this to be unusal and decided to get a 2nd opinion I went to a Holistic vet and was told that Moka was spayed way to young and has an incontinence problem. She now takes Cranberry pills 3xs a day and we have no more problems. She has been on the pills for about 4 months maybe longer. So my old vet took me for a ride on my money and diagnosed my dog wrong. If at all possible can you get a 2nd opinion? Best of luck,

Re: Urinary Infection? Hey! Thank you so much for the advice. Heidi was spayed last week. My breeder told me that after doing some research herself discovered that having a female puppy spayed might help cure the problem! Huh... We were going to have her spayed anyway because of not wanting any puppies! What is the MG amount on the cranberry tablets that your pup is receiving? Again thank you! Abi
