Diagnosis: Heartworm

A Rottie that was recently adopted from our shelter was just diagnosed with Heartworm. The Vet feels that the dog has had it for some time. What can the new owners expect to face in treatment? Are there side affects from the meds? How long should the treatment take? Has anyone ever had to go through treatment with one of their dogs?

The dog is a neutered 5 year old male. 111 lbs.

I've known of quite a few dogs that have gone through heartworm treatment with no problems. However, some do have problems and it depends on the dog's overall health & condition. I've only had one treated for heartworm (a Basset that lived with the co-owner) and he never turned a hair. From what I've heard, one of the hardest things is to keep the dog quiet until the treatment is completed. This, of course, would depend on the dog's temperament though. I believe both ivermectin and sodium caparsolate are used in treatment & the sodium caparsolate is an arsenic compound. So the treatment can be hard on the dog, especially if it is already in less than good condition.
