normal swelling after spaying?

How much swelling around the incision is normal, after being spayed.

I am just a little concerned about gwens swelling. It is about 3/4 of the incision, more on one side then the other, and noticable but I don't know if i should bring her in to the vet. (they already think I'm too overprotective), so I thought I would get some comments from you guys.

The incision looks fine, a little red, but I know it is ok, its just the swelling I don't know about. When I touch it, it feels hard, not mushy like the rest of her fat belly

Should I be worried? BTW she got spayed Fri. morning & she is completly normal, and trying to run and jump. I am now putting her in her crate, cause I think maybe walking around all the time is bad?

Sometimes a reaction to the suture material can produce swelling, but this is usually all along the incision. Uneven swelling suggests a local infection might be building. Have it checked. We always recheck incisions at no charge if the owner has any concern about how things look. It's part of normal post-surgical follow up.

I'm not particularly over protective but if it were my puppy, I'd have it checked. I did have one spay where the incision developed an abcess which had to be drained and re-stitched.

Usually after surgery there will be a swelling, if it is the size or smaller than surgery site and hard then it is either normal tissue reaction, inflammation and all part of your girl starting to heal, or it is the internal sutures you are feeling, the only real time to be concerned is a) If your dog is overly active b) If it is a soft swelling c) If it has associated pus, blood, oozing or soreness when touched. If in doubt always get your vet to check it out, but yours sounds like normal healing to me.

thanks all.
i just took her in anyway. who cares if my vet thinks im overprotective...i'd rather be safe then sorry

she has been active, not too much, no running or jumping, but she does have to walk down the stairs to go out. i tried to carry her and we both almost killed ourselves, so...

swelling was just a little more then normal, told me she should be fine, and to do hot compress 2x a day. the swelling is much better now

thanks for your replies
