Talking diabetic dog losing weight

I have a 10 1/2 year old rottie that has had diabetes for about 4 years. It has always been manageable with humulin n insulin, 25 units 2x's day and she is on Eukanuba Low Residue... (she also had inflammatory bowel syndrome). The past 6 months, she has lost a lot of weight (10-15 lbs). As of lately, I have been very unhappy with her vets... they seem to be money hungry lately due to building a new facility. I don't know how to increase her weight. Other than a ear infection here or there, she is very healthy for being over 10 years old. Any advice?

She is a great dog and I am not ready to give up on her. My son isn't even 2 yet and they are best friends. Just want a way to increase the length of her life. THANKS!

Re: diabetic dog losing weight

Several thoughts:

a) Do you monitor her sugars daily, and if so, are they still within her normal range?

b) Could you find another vet and have some xrays taken and blood work run?

I would be quite concerned with that much weight loss in a dog of that age. I'm sorry that your vet is not being more helpful. Do you see any other signs/symptoms such as less energy, not herself, etc? Are you able to elicit pain anywhere or do you feel any enlarged lymph nodes in her neck?

Re: diabetic dog losing weight

Do you home test? When was the last time she had a curve run?

Have you have any blood work done on her?

Was she ever tested for Cushings? Or had her tyroid checked?

I know how frustrating it is when you don't feel comfortable with your vets.

My boy was diabetic for over 4 yrs b4 I lost him.
