Puppy vaginitis? Has anyone ever had a pup with puppy vaginitis? Is it harmful to the pup? Does anyone know what causes it.

I've had it in a pup. I don't know what the long term implications of it are but it was very easily treated. The vet gave us some medication that cleared it up pretty quickly.

If you feed a kibble based diet, add a little apple cider vinegar to the food everyday. This adds a little acidity to the meal and balances out the kibble keeping the dog's system more alkaline. I understand this helps with chronic vaginitis in bitches as well.

Missy had it when she was younger. She had to take antibiotics and we had to put cream in there for awhile. She eventually out grew it.

Re: Puppy vaginitis? Hi, instead of starting a new thread, hoping other rottie bitch owners could add to the info I have already received. BTW thanks everyone, this forum is awesome! Erin is now 10 weeks old, and has had puppy vaginitis for about 4 weeks now. It is not excessive, nor is it smelly, but sometimes I do notice a dark yellow/greenish discharge. She's been to the vet twice already for her shots and check ups, and the vet says it should clear on its own, without intervention. Still, she's my little girl and I worry about her. Does Apple Cider Vinegar work? I notice she does not "pee too low" or anything like that, and both Amber and Erin get a wipe with a baby wipe daily just to keep the area clean. Thanks

Re: Puppy vaginitis? A colored discharge usually indicates infection. If your vet won't address it, take her to another for evaluation. Vaccinations will tax the immune system. making it harder to fight off infection. If they give her antibiotics add some garlic to her food (you can use the minced garlic in a jar from the produce section of your grocery store) to fend off the yeasts that can accumulate.

Re: Puppy vaginitis? Don't forget that the immune system is a work in progress at this time, just like the rest of the puppy! :) The vets would rather give it a chance to clear up on its own so the immune system can be called into service and do its job, thereby becoming stronger. As long as she is otherwise full of puppy joy and the vet is aware of the discharge, I'd follow his advice and allow her own immune system a chance to come to task. :)

Re: Puppy vaginitis? My vet does not treat unless it appears nasty. He recommends keeping the vagina area clean. Of course treat if the discharge appears nasty (real smelly or green, etc.) He also says it is normal and usually self-limiting and correcting. I have found that to be true. That of course, assumes a basically healthy pup.

| Re: Puppy vaginitis? It's not uncommon in girls. Keep the hair on the vulva trimmed and you might want to wipe her when she comes in. It will resolve when she comes into heat, or when she's spayed.

Re: Puppy vaginitis? Thanks everyone for the info. Erin is totally a healthy puppy, full of energy, it just was a bit of discharge, but it really wasnt smelly, so thats why the vet said to leave it. I was going to take her in for a second opinion, but she seems OK and I do give both my girls' "privates" a good wipe daily.
