Worms....help!

Hello everyone,

I have two 7 month old Rotties , brother and sister. they have gone through all the shots, treatments etc, and been spayed and nuetered. I also had them dewormed when going through this.

Today, i looked in Taylors stool and it looked like white rice (alittle smaller) was in her stool. Tyson's was clean. i looked closley and they were moving in her stool and my vet is closed today. First off should i get dewormer at the store and give it to her today since vet isnt open then bring the stool sample in monday, what kind of worms are they, should i assume he has them too, and unfortunatly they sleep on my bed so besides washing the bedding today am i at any risk. Sorry for all the info questions , im just grossed out! thanks Rob

they typically graze on grass and occasionaly i have seen her ingest rabbit droppings, figure that may be where she/they got them? no idea...

Re: Worms....help!

I don't feel like the store remedys work, and I would be worried about giving one that doesnt work, then having to wait for a week or two before it is safe to give one from the vet. I understand that you had them wormed when you had their shots done, and good for you getting them spayed/neutered! but that brings me to ask if they are on any monthly preventative like heart worm meds and flea/tick control? I beleive the heart worm pills also help with other worms so they are great to give monthly, and we also do flea/tick preventative monthly.

I don't think most worms go over to humans (I could be wrong and I am sure others will pitch in with more advice) but again, I wouldnt give something from the store I dont know for SURE will work, only to have to hold off on the stuff from the vet to be safe and not over medicate.

Re: Worms....help!

yeah, they are on monthly interceptor and they are on monthly frontline advanced. i will just wait and drop off samples at the vet on monday and live with the dogs and worms here in stead of using a store product that probably wont do any good but maybe have me cleaning diareha all afternoon! thanks for the reply. i think they are round worms. i have all i can handle with these two running around here, i didnt need the extra company! thanks rob

Re: Worms....help!

Tapeworm segments look like grains of rice inthe poop.

First, make sure you are picking up all poop from the affected dog.

Second, take a fresh sample to the vet on Monday - try to get a sample with the tapeworm segments in the poop - I had a foster that tested negative twice for worms yet the segments were clearly visible in the second poop sample.

Vet will more than likely give a 3-5 day dosing of Panacur to kill the worms.

The Tapeworm Page
From marvistavet:
CAN PEOPLE GET THEM?
Theoretically, yes, people can get them but they must be infected the same way dogs and cats are: by swallowing an infected flea.

Dog Owner's Guide: Canine worms
From the canismajor link: Tapeworm is transmitted to dogs who ingest fleas or who hunt and eat wildlife infested with tapeworms or fleas. The dog sheds segments of the tapeworm containing the eggs in its feces. These segments are flat and move about shortly after excretion. They look like grains of rice when dried and can be found either in the dog's stool or stuck to the hair around his anus. Tapeworms cannot be killed by the typical over-the-counter wormer; see the veterinarian for appropriate treatment.
