hypothyroidism

My 2 yr old male has just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. His T4 came back with a 1.0, 2.0-4.0 being normal according to my vet.She is starting him on Soloxine. Are there any problem side effects to look for? Should I be concerned about a shortened life span? Is there another way to control this, maybe by diet? Any literature suggestions would also be appreciated. Thank you.

As long as you have the correct dosage I don't think you'll have any problems. I believe some people have the dog's thyroid level checked every year to make sure the dosage is correct as it can fluctuate. I haven't heard of any side effects though.

My dog's mother, Sasha, is hypothyroid, is 10 years old and going strong. I am hypothyroid, myself, and the medication that Sasha takes is exactly the same as the medication that I take, and all I'll tell you is that I'm middle aged! http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif

I can tell you that there are no side effects that I've ever seen (in me or the dog!) as long as the blood levels are checked yearly and the dosage is correct.

There is no way that this can be controlled by diet or with herbal supplements. The medication is very safe, has been around for years and the best thing you can do is keep your dog on it. You would actually shorten his life span by not giving it to him. On this medication, he will live a normal life and you'd never know there ever was a problem. http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif

Jason who is now almost 9 1/2 years old has been on thyroid since he was five months old. He was put to work, and excelled in almost everything. No side effects, and he's doing great. Don't worry; just remember the meds. jv

Thanks for the replies. The more I know about my dogs condition the better I feel. The Dr. also mentioned that a side-efffect could be that the dog becomes hyperactive (i.e. digging in the yard, couch, etc.) My dog has yet to have a problem with lethargy so I can hardly wait to see him more hyperactive. He already has the energy of a kangaroo in the obedience ring!!
