| Tail Cropping?
Can anyone tell me what the proper procedure for cropping a rott's tail is? I need to know how soon to have it done, and how long it should be according to Standard. I don't plan on doing this myself, I just want to know what to expect when i go to the vet. Thank you! Todd Dougherty dougherty@dakotapugs.com |

| tails are docked at 2 to 6 days of age. There is little calcified bone at this age and pain is as minimal as it gets, especially if a good vet does them or a very knowlegable breeder. HOWEVER Tail removal after these ages is an amputation of thoroughly calcified tail with completed nervous synapses and should only be performed for medical reasons never for looks ------------------ Diane Frontier Rottweilers & Shiba Inu and Volunteer with NorthEast Rottweiler Rescue & Referral http://www.rottrescue.org |

| Thank you for your prompt reply. The pups were whelped on 1/25/00, and will be taken to the vet today or tomorrow! This is our first litter of rottis, so it is a new experience for us. -td Quote:

Diane, have you actually docked tails @ 6 days?I band the tails at 24-hours old! My first litter had an unsure DVM, who butchered the tails on the puppies. So, now I band out of necissity...and IMO, I have found the earlier the better! ------------------ @..@ +-------------------------------------+ (----) | Dianna @ Braxenburg Rottweilers ( >__< ) |'Bitches Rule, Dogs Drool' ^ ~~ ^ +-----------------------------------+ |

| i usually band the tails at 3 days when I am sure all are growing well and are doing ok, gaining weight well etc... I did have one litter that Ibanded at 6 days because I was working 12 hour days and just had not had the time before then (I was mortified when I looked at the calendar and realised that they were that old! and btw my husband was home with them caring for them but is not capable of banding tails! ) BUT normally I do them at 3 - 4 days of age.I too had a vet dock tails way too long and switched to banding, BUT I must say for the novice reeders outthere that it is not a method for inexperienced people. I always tell new breeders to have the vet dock their pups tails and try to get them to dock just past the anal rim. ------------------ Diane Frontier Rottweilers & Shiba Inu and Volunteer with NorthEast Rottweiler Rescue & Referral http://www.rottrescue.org [This message has been edited by frontierrots (edited January 26, 2000).] |

| Yes, banding is not something I would recommend to first-timers...you really need to be taught by someone that has done it. There is quite a difference though, in banding at 24-hours old...not one of the puppies squeaked. My 'Donnie' litter, the boys were so large (just 2 of them) -- they were both 1.5 to 2 lbs @ 3 days old, that they cried...so I automatically band at 24-hours old. I love the tail set, very clean, never longer than 1 vertebra... DakotaPugs, I'm assuming you have Puglets? ![]() My partner, just purchased a Pug puppy on a co-ownership. We picked her up...and she slept at my home for the first night, and I was instantly smitten. Pug puppies have definately have to put Rottweiler puppies on the run for cuteness! ------------------ @..@ +-------------------------------------+ (----) | Dianna @ Braxenburg Rottweilers ( >__< ) |'Bitches Rule, Dogs Drool' ^ ~~ ^ +-----------------------------------+ |

| I was waiting to see what would happen, and as it turned out, it's gotten pretty ugly here anyhow. Dutchess whelped three puppies, and lost one. We thought she was done and consulted two vets and palpated her to see if there were more. We could not feel any. Later, she started to go down hill, so we took her to the vet. She had 5 dead pups inside her and they had to be taken, along with her uterus. Dutch is still at the vet, all hooked up to tubes and IV's, and is recovering very slowly. We are hand feeding her pups. The vet said she had never seen anything like it. Apparently it was some sort of internal birth defect that no one could have known about without a lot of exams, etc. We really don't know why it happened just yet, but are just concerned with saving her at this point. I suppose some would say we asked for this, or place the blame on inexperienced breeders, etc, but no one wanted this to happen. Thanks for all your input, everybody - I guess we have learned a painful lesson this week. [Note: This message has been edited by ~cosmo] |

| thanks to all who expressed concern for Dutch and her pups. I am hppy to say that all is well now...with bot mother and pups. The two survivors are very nice looking dogs. one male and one female, and Dutchess is proving to be a very doting mother. Thank you again for all your feedback and thoughts. Todd Dougherty |

| Congratulations - you're doubly lucky that mom is taking such good care of the pups after her ordeal. Glad to know your luck wasn't all bad .Nancy ------------------ von Dorow Rottweilers doggo1@apex2000.net |
