Ears--Yeast Infection My 9 month old male three weeks ago started shaking his head and I noticed they were very dirty, with stinky brown deposites. I took him to the vet, diagnosis was ear mites. the vet prescribed Cerumite- 10 drops in each ear for 14 days. I did that as well as cleansing his ears each day. Then I noticed he had been scratching the back of one ear to the point that he had opened up a pretty nasty sore. So I called the vet back, vet told me to repeat the mite treatment for another week. Well the condition has gotten worse so I took him back to the vet today. And told them to check for a yeast infection. Shure enough Found it to be a severe yeast infection. Also told me that there is a possibility that he, by scratching has ruptured his ear drum. They precribed, DermaPet and by looking at the bottle it says it is a ear\skin cleanser for pets. I am to apply this once per day for another 14 days.. They wanted to sedate him and clean his ears. At this time I have lost a bit of faith in the vet, first they didnt accuratly diagnose the yeast infection, leading to possible permanent damage to his one ear, then they want to sedate him???? Im not shure if this cleaner stuff is what is needed to clear up the infection. I had a Sharpie that was notorious for getting yeasty ears and we always got a special ointment for that problem. Now just getting a cleaner solution. Heres my question, Does anyone know what the best treatment for this condition is?? Is there anything I can do about the potential ear drum rupture. Poor pup is in alot of pain. I have checked my other dogs their ears look fine.. thanks Trish

Hey Trish, Try this www.rottweiler.net/rottie/Forum5/HTML/000174.html This was a recent thread on this forum. You can also try doing a search on 'yeast infection' for more info. ------------------ Rachel aka rottie_mama http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/7900 [This message has been edited by rottie_mama (edited August 10, 1999).] [This message has been edited by rottie_mama (edited August 10, 1999).] [This message has been edited by rottie_mama (edited August 10, 1999).]

Thanks for pointing me to the thread. I searched for ears didnt list anything. I worry about the possibility of the ruptured ear drum. Will the solution mentioned in the other thread agravate that ear drum. We would be looking at serious problems then.? I really wish my vet would have caught this in the beginning, it would have never gotten this bad.

I have no idea Trish. I would assume that if your pooches ear drum is ruptured that you shouldn't get water and stuff down in it. That's what they say about human ears. Do you know for sure that his ear drum is ruptured or are you guessing? If you don't trust your current vet are there any other ones in your area? It's pretty important that you be comfortable with your vets judment. Hopefully one of the other members will be able to help you more than me. http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif ------------------ Rachel aka rottie_mama http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/7900

I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I do know that vinegar (preferably cider) kills yeast. I place a little on a cotton ball to use as a cleanser and to combat yeast. It works great and is natural. If the ear drum is ruptured, it should heal with little or no scarring.

Hi Trish, Your dogs yeast based ear infections may be caused by either food or inhaled allergies. I have a three year old male (Belfie) that had re-occuring yeast ear infections. We did the flushing and ear ointment thing for I dont know how long until someone mentioned having him tested for allergies. There is a very good test for inhaled allergies. Your vet will draw blood, send it out to a lab where they will analyse it and send the results back listing anything positive and to what degree. Belfie tested positive to a multitude of things and was way off the scale. His allergies are extreme. The best way to test for food allergies is to go to a dermatologist - a good one. Please go to a vet that you are comfortable with. I would NEVER put either of my dogs under for an ear cleaning. I would also be very wary of home remadies IF you suspect any type of allergies. One of the vets did not read Belfies files and used "regular" ear cleaning solution on him - both ears were ulcerated and he was screaming in agony. It was horrible. I feed Belfie the BARF diet and do not deviate from this. We give him weekly allergy shots, bath him with episoothe shampoo and I try to keep the house vacuumed. Makes a big difference. We have not had any ear problems for quite a while now. If I can be of any help you can email me at ANehr74498@aol.com as I do not get here often enough. Thanks.

THERE IS HELP! I just finally this week got Cain's ear problem relief. I also trusted my regular vet to diagnose, I heard ear mites, the medicine didn't help. He has had this problem since March of this year. I took him to ANOTHER vet, who correctly diagnosed the yeast infection, but not treating this type of problem regularly, didn't know the proper treatment. I looked in my yellow pages and found a "doctor referral clinic" and made an appointment. On the first visit, BINGO, a diagnosis. They flushed his ears (felt good, I know) and prescribed a steriod (it looks like "audnisone" and Lotrimin for ear drops twice a day. CAIN'S PAIN WAS GONE IN THREE DAYS! I took him back yesterday for his two week checkup, and we are putting him on a diet with limited protein source to check for food allergy. We'll go from there. Please, please see if you have a allergy veterinarian in your area, your little buddy will thank you profusely. One little note, Cain had to be muzzled for his protection at the vet, please be sure you do this for him, AND the vet. Cain lost it when they were looking in his ears because they hurt so much. The muzzle can be kind if you go get your own and make sure it fits him properly. Also, be prepared for his behavior. He'll be scared and angry. THIS REALLY WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just found out it's prednisone#. Forgot to say that he was only on a therapy once a day for 10 days. Guess this stuff is pretty powerful. If you want, E-mail me at guberdog@flash.net. [This message has been edited by guberdog (edited August 20, 1999).]
