| Dew Claw Hi,I went to my vet last week to have my 3 month old Rottweiler check out per my contract with the breeder she got her last set of puppy shots. all was fine but on her left hind leg the vet said the dew claw was not done correctly it could have been done closer. the vet had me feel the leg and I could feel a little nub. the rest of the legs I could not. I call the breeder to let them know and he said that this was normal because sometimes the dew claws can grow back some due to this procedure is done just 72 hours after birth. and this is acceptable even in the show ring. plus this did not effete the health of the dog. can someone tell me if this is true. | yup! sometimes a tiny bit of the nail bud is missed and sometimes a tiny bit of nail grows back. Nothing worth having more surgery done on the dog though I personally sell all pups that had rear dew claws as pets and won't breed them BUT this is a personal preference as I don't want rear dew claws present and if you breed dogs that had them you will get them. Mylast 3 litters had zero rear dew claws. Before I started this policy I had a 50% rear dewclaw rate I know I'm a strange bird! http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif ------------------ Diane Frontier Rottweilers & Shiba Inu www.frontierrots.com |

| Thanks for the info. I never knew that by breeding in a certain way they could be born with no rear dew claws. ok I feel better now knowing it's no big deal. My vet did suggest when I had her fixed at six months he could correct it when she was under but I will leave well enough alone. [Note: This message has been edited by ~cosmo] |
