Venting - Post Neutering Behavior Normal?

(Un)fortunately Bear has recovered quite nicely. I'm a basket case and I'm going hoarse from yelling "NO!" at him. He keeps trying to mount Lady (now wasn't that supposed to stop once he was fixed? he seems randier now than before and his body is, um, confirming that) and continues to "goose" her by sneaking under her and tossing her up. If I put him in his crate, he chews his stitches. ACK!

Just need to vent.

Maybe he's trying for his last fling ! Some neutered dogs, by the way, can still breed a bitch, just aren't fertile. Now didn't that make you feel better?

Thanks, Nancy, I'm sure Lady'll love hearing that <giggling>. Actually, she tries to mount him as often as he does her (not tonight, but normally) so I suppose things will just continue as normal.

Although I thought that part of the reason for doing this was so that he wouldn't have the urge and wouldn't be tempted to wander... was that false advertising?

Thanks, Nancy!

No, actually "that" behavior usually fades away . Although if a neutered male is around an intact bitch he usually will make some sort of effort when she's in season - usually pretty half-hearted. Actually, I've only seen this in males that were neutered as adults, as were all the males I've had neutered. I've never had one neutered as a puppy.

HI Sara,

The mounting behavior your dogs are displaying does not sound to be sexuall.
I sounds to me to be a dominance issue.
Dogs will of either sex and of same sex mount each other, This is a sign of dominance in the dogs. It is their way of establishing picking order.
Also your male: After a neuter it is common for the male to show some of his behavior. At this time his body is expelling testosterone due to the removal of the testes, all of this is normal.
Sounds like your two are doing just fine.

Nancy and Trish,

Glad to hear that this won't last forever because it's worse than it was before!! <laughing> I think Trish explained that, though. He's apparently got a lot of extra energy to get rid of (ahem). He is in a great mood, practically laughing, doing his "play with me" dance, grinning like a fool. She's in just about as good a mood although she gets tired after a little bit and he doesn't get that and wants to keep playing.

Today every body is fine and hyper and wound up.

I, on the other hand, am exhausted and nauseaus (sp) and am about ready to tape record "Don't lick that" "Don't chew that" "STOP that!" and "BEAR!!!" so that I can just hit play rather than wasting my remaining vocal chords.

Ack.

Thanks for the support

Sara: As the others have said this is normal behavior. I love your sense of humor!!
Aside from that just TRY to relax and let them be what they are. Hard being a mom, though!! Lady will let Bear know when she has had enough and probably in no uncertain terms!! She probably runs the show anyway !!

Sara,

Let me tell you a funny story about my tom cat Ziggy. Ziggy was born from the neiborhood wild 'mamma cat' I captured him when he was 4 months old. He liked to have torn my house apart when I captured him, after SEVERAL weeks of working with him. I had to wrap him up in a towel to keep him from biting and scratching me. He was WILD as a hater! Eventually he decided that domesticated cat life wasnt all that bad. As he grew up, I would let him out. Naturally became MR.Cat man of the neiborhood, and had his following of lady freinds. He would stay gone for a week, come home dive into the food bowl, rest up for a week and out to the Gigolo trail he would go. Happy as a lark.

I really should have had him neutered sooner but I worried he would be such a terror at the vets office. I am the only person even today that can even touch him.

I bought a new house and had just put down 2 grand worth of new carpet and the place was in the country so I needed to get him neutered. One so he wouldnt ruin the new house and two I was afraid of his roaming in the country. Alot more for him to get in trouble ie: bob cats, deer, snakes, coons you name it.

Took him to the vet. He actually did pretty good. surgery went great. But one of the techs. didnt think it was necessary to put on the gloves to handle him. Boy did he get a surprize. He reached into his crate, while he was still half dozed and tried to pick him up. Well mr.technician got bitten 5 times for his effort. I bet he never grabs a 'wild cat' again without gloves. Needless to say Ziggy had to stay there for 10 days. procedure after a bite. They didnt charge me for it though. because it was due to their techs. inexperience/ and not following gloves only procedure.

Heres where it gets funny. Ziggy was def
inately a MAN when he got neutered. He was almost 2 years old.. Because of all that testosterone coming out of his system. He stunk to high heaven. They actually had to put him in the room with the D-O-G-S. He wreaked!!!! it was several months before he finally realized he wasnt a TOM. He still 5 years later, does that tom cat 'yowling' I guess he likes to keep up the practice.

Just thought you'd like the story.

Two disclaimers. First, every time I get into Netscape the last few days and hit the back button, I crash, which is partially why it's taken so long to respond but second, my schedule also makes my free time erratic, so sometimes I'm here constantly and other times it's days between I love this place and wouldn't mind living here

Anyway. I'm glad you appreciate my odd humor, Lady B. It comes in handy in most aspects of my life. It's also a safety gauge... when it goes, I know I'm on the verge of a major blowout and had better either hide or warn the person about to be killed to run.

Bear did calm down (finally!) and Lady did catch up energy wise. You'd never know they were operated on just five days ago. Well, they do get a little tired a little quicker than usual on our walks, but that is, in my opinion, a good thing, cause they go to sleep for hours when we get home and I get some work done!!

Trish, Bear didn't smell... is he broken?

I love that story about Ziggy but you're nuts!! Okay, maybe I feel that way 'cause I'm so allergic to cats I wouldn't go so far out of my way to rescue one... he sounds like a handful to say the least!

Does he stay home now, though, your little gigolo?

Ziggy is a homebody now. He absolutely loves the domesticated cat life. Living with the luxuries of conditioned air, free supply of food, and all the attention he wants.
He is really not a handful for me. He loves me, Im the only one that he will let touch. I think he is kool, he is so big that when he purrrs he sounds like a chain saw.. he sleeps on my head.

Trish

PS. no I dont think bear is broke.. Thank gawd, dawgs dont get musky like puddy tats
