How long does teething last...

Our 4 1/2 month old lost her first tooth yesterday. How long does this last and is there anything I should be doing?

Thanks

Mike

Teething happens between 3 and 7 months of age. so your looking at another 3-months of teething.

Teething isn't it wonderful! All that I can say is keep alot of hard chew toys or bones around. I have managed to find a few and I have kept them. There is nothing else that you can do, but wait it out.

A German Shepard breeder told me she puts ice cubes in a sock and freezes the sock. She said that it really soothes their teeth.

you can wet a rolled up towel or knotted sock and freeze it - and give that to chew

Carrots are good chew "toys" for teething - taken from the refrigerator they are nice and cold when the gums are sore from teething. They're also not that hard to chew and most dogs like to eat them. They can be pretty messy indoors though.

How long does it last? Not to be depressing, but its been said they "chew 'till 2" (years old).

Hiya Mike,

the posts are right. teething usually starts around 3 months and lasts until 6-7 months of age. First they will lose the teeth on top and bottom in the middle. Then they will lose the canines (the long ones) The long ones come out at about 6 months. Then finally the back teeth will come in. There is really nothing that you absolutely have to do when they are teething. A good hard chew toy is good for working those gums and helping push those new teethies. My 4 month old Bulldog pup is teething right now too, she is actually losing so many teeth, she plays very rough, that she actually has a pretty sore mouth right now and is having problems eating. Im having to wet her kibble right now to help, while the new teeth come in. Other than that, she still gives the Rotties hell, toothless as she is right now.

Briar Rose:

Chewing until 2 happens because the owner hasnt taught the dog what to chew and what not too. Some dogs enjoy a chew bone all their lives. The way you wrote your post makes it sound like the destructive chewing? Am I right? IF that is the case. At two years old age and a dog is still destructively chewing, that is because that dog has never been taught different.
