Weird Symptoms - can't keep food down

Hey there. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what may be wrong with my year old, spayed Rotti. About a week and a half ago she ended up eating some of my parents Purina Dog Chow. Which is not her regular diet. I feed her Nutrience Large Breed puppy formula. Actually I just switched to that recently from Dog Food Supreme Formula. Anyway we were over at my parents' house and she got into their dog's food bowl and ate about 5 cups of the Purina food. Later on that night, in the middle of the night she vomited, what looked to be all five cups. Anyway, the day after I tried feeding her, her regular diet and she vomited that all over the place, she couldn't even keep down water. She would have a drink of water and vomit it up. I took her to the vet and they did some tests on her, everything appeared to be normal. They recommended that I put her on a hamburger-rice diet. I did that for 3 days. She kept it down fine. Yesterday however, my girlfriend gave her a hand full of kibble and she vomited it right back up. I then thought that maybe it was because she had been out for a run not too long before. I waited an hour or so and then fed her again. This time she ate about 2 cups. In fear that she may be sick all over the place I put her in her crate. In the morning I let her out, and almost instantly she vomited. I have no idea what is wrong. Please help. It seems as though she has had the hicups lately. Yesterday as well, something weird happened. My girlfriend came home, first knocking on the front door to seem if my Rotti would respond. No response. She walked in and found my Rotti lying on my bed, having urinated on my bed. Her bum was even wet as though she had been lying it. She is fully toilet trained and I have no idea what is wrong. I am very worried. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sincerely,

A very worried dog owner.

If her symptoms have persisted this long you probably should contact your vet again. Have her stools been normal? A worse-case scenario could be something like a blockage.

Hi Jake-
I don't know if this will help you but, what your baby is doing sounds very similar to some of my baby's growing pains. Basically, before Jeb was a year old twice he got a hold of some type of dog food not his diet and both times he just got horribly sick. He had the runs and could not control his bowels, bladder, or stomach. He was vomitting and he could not wait to go outside to the bathroom. Anyway the vet had no explaination for it he said that his stomach was young and sensitive. So he had me not feed him for 24 hours just give him water. Then the next 48 hours small amounts of rice that I cooked with pieces of chicken. The bland food helped his stomach get back on track, and the small amounts so the overload would not cause him to vomit again. Now I am not a vet but I hope this helps. Good luck

You know, I don't want to seem to lash out at Purina, they serve their purpose, but I have had big dogs for 12 years now, and when I first started feeding them I fed them Purina. Then switched them after 2-3 years to a better pet store brand. I can't tell you how many times I have cleaned up dog vomit and loose poop because they were on Purina, you know I think that their food must have SUGAR and FILLER in it. In the last 8 years, I have been absolutely thrilled with the Nutra products...don't want to wander off. I have grown boys now, but I remember when they were little and ate a WHOLE LOT of HoHo's or DingDongs, they were hyper but also got very sick because of the sugar, took a day or two to get back to normal. THE VET IS THE FIRST RESOURCE...and be sure that the vet knows about his slipping around and sneaking this other probably a little more tasty food. Good Luck.

Did your girl run around alot after she ate? I am thinking that maybe her stomach has turned. I am no vet, and have not had this happen to any of my animals, but I do know it happens and it is very serious. It almost sounds like a possible cause. Keep us posted as to what the vet says.

Sometimes the poor dears eventually just can't stomach the garbage put in commercial dogfood anylonger. You may have to "bite the bullet" yourself and change to "homecooking"----nothing but real, unprocessed meat. Cooked poultry, raw beef chuck (if hamburger, cook it!) liver, etc. Meat-broth "soup" to fill 'em up. Some dogs don't tolerate veges and grains, and some do. My 10 year old needs 1lb meat/day to stay in good shape (weights 80lbs & gets at least 6 hours week off leash at the park.) Homecooking is a pain, but you get used to it, and it always seems our girls are worth it, aren't they.
