when to dock newborn's tails?

i found a litter of rott pup's who had their tails docked at five days old. my vet says they will do them up to three days old, beyond that, it is amputation, and longterm problems could be nerve damage. also, the mother of these pups had some sort of hormone problem...so at the advice of the owners vet she was told to: 'go ahead and breed her, that will get it out of her'. any feedback on either of these issues, please.

Re: when to dock newborn's tails?

I had heard that you can dock tails up to 5 days old....

I don't know why anyone would breed a dog with any kind of "problem."

Sounds like the Vet wasn't giving such great advice and isn't really concerned with the world's pet overpopulation problem.............

What a pity the owner didn't find another vet before breeding the dog.

What an odd story--where did you find this litter of puppies?? How do you know the bitch had the problems she did??

Re: when to dock newborn's tails?

If you're considering getting a puppy from this litter, DON'T!!!!

There is no problem in females that having a litter "solves." Letting a bitch go through one heat cycle before spaying can help with puppy vaginitis, but NOT breeding her.

Many vets are poorly schooled in reproduction issues, this story proves the point.
