Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

Greetings. I think this is my first post.

Rock is my 7yo male.

Ok, I have read every skin post on this site I think, and I cant make heads or tails of what he has going on.

Long Story:

The week of July 4th we went out of town, and left Rock with the GF's parents (as we have many times in the past). When we get back, its 'party weekend' so we spend the entire weekend camping. Rock spends lots of time outside with us, but goes in the house at night. Monday we get back home, and I take him to Petsmart to get a scrubbin (neighbor works in the groom shop there). She points out these little 'spots' on his back legs, and kinda where his belly meets his 'sides'. They are round spots, bout the size of a dime (maybe a little smaller) and are dead skin. I immediately freak out, and suspect ring worms. I took him to the vet Tuesday. They black light him, and say its not ringworm. The vet says that she thinks that it's an allergy, and gives him some anti-itch pills. I gave him them for 30 days, and gave him a weekly bath with some oatmeal shampoo stuff. Well, 30 days come and go, and they arent any better. I took him back, and it just happend that the day I went, the vet was on vacation, and she had a 'stand in' vet. He suggested a thyroid panel, and antibotics. He also gave him a steroid shot. well, the antibotics lasted like 4 weeks. He STILL has these spots. They are like little circular 'skabs' that are just random all over him now (not on his face / head yet).

Here is a pic, its rather hard to see, but its the 'yellow' skin area. They are about the size of a quarter now. Most of his healthy skin is that bright white color like the bottom of the pic.

Sorry about the size, it's about the only way I could 'show' the bad spot.

353 new posts... 37 views... Almost 24 hours...

Please tell me that this isnt one of those forums that the 'regulars' dont reply to 'newbies' when they ask 'stupid' questions.

Nevermind the queston though, I found a local Vet "dermatologist" I'm taking him to.

This isn't such a place.

I, for one, have no idea--what you describe is beyond my experience.

I am interested in hearing what the dermatologist says, so I hope you return and tell us.

Rocks dad, we try not to butt in if we don't know any answers. However, don't mistake no answers for no one caring. We all want to know that your boy is going to be ok, so we are all waiting to hear how your dermatologist visit turns out.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

Well, glad to hear. I was worried that this was perhaps one of those sites where popularity rules.

I still dont understand the admin 'reviewing' the post thing here... but hey

I'll be calling them tomorrow, and seeing if i can get him in thurs / fri, hopefully its not leproacy or something

I brushed him today, and I must say... I was nearly gross'd out.

He has hundereds of little circular skabs all over now... some are bloody, some have big (1/2 dime sized) chunks of crusty skin. They range in size from 1/2 dime, to quarter, and go from his neck, to his hind quarters.

I'll definately let you all know what the derm says.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

I'm definitely not an expert...but did your vet do any type of skin scrapings to rule out all the various types of mange? I know my girl had demodex and it was discovered with a skin scraping....

Please keep us posted on your boy...we would like to know what the dermalogist discovers.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

Sounds a lot like ringworm. Don't worry it sounds worse than it is. Ringworm is a fungus that causes circular scabs, it clears up with daily treatment of a fungicide, like tinactin or lomitrin. Please let us know what you find out!

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

This is not a snobby site. Usually if we are not familiar with a problem that is posted, we just keep quiet and let the members who might know what it is post their answers.

Welcome. We are a VERY friendly bunch united by our love of the breed. Hope your Rock's problem gets a quick diagnosis and cure. Please keep us advised.

You can teach us about something we have not come across before.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

I have called, and got an appointment with the Vet Dermatologist next Tuesday.

I had to call my regular vet today, and get a referal... I need to call tomorrow am, to ensure that she sent it.

I'll definately let everyone know what it is.

I'm pretty sure it's not ringworm, as he sleeps with the GF and I, every night, and neither of us have it.

I'm leaning more and more towards alergy.

I am moving him to Canidae dry, and Canidae wet (1 can per day) as a treat, to eliminate the food. He has been on Eukanuba Maintenance for about the last 3 years. Before that he was on Science Diet.

Check out my Greetings thread, for pics of my dawg.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

Hope the dermatologist can give you an answer. Allergies are always a potential answer. If the Canidae isn't satisfactory for some reason, there's lots of posts here about other premium foods, some of which are designed to be good for dogs with allergies because they have relatively few ingredients.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

I saw something simular on a dog in the club.I say simular becuase I am not sure it is the same.It took some time before they did find out it was an infection caused by staphylococ bacteria. It started on the skin and after a week or two an infection of the eye occuered also.Seemed like it was entropion which it was absolutely not. After a cure with antibiotics(for 2 months )evrything seems to be allright now.Hope you soon find out what it really is and PLEASE let us know.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

Sorry could not help you. Saw the post, and they just look like scabs, maybe from playfighting with another dog? Thats the only skin condition I've seen that resembles that, and I've seen quite a few different things.

I could recommend a bunch of supplements to boost the immune system and help with cell regeneration, Ester-C, Omega3, vitamin E. For an anti-inflamatory, liquid Traumeel in his water bowl.

If its some sort of infection or fungi, you can mix a few drops of Oil of Oregano with water in a spray bottle, and spray it on the sores, but if they are open sores, it may sting a little.
