Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

NOT a vet but do have 21 years in the breed.

OFF the top of my head

*my number one choice- Rottie crusties which a lot of rotts get. It's a form of staph infection (like a hot spot except the spots stay-usually less than quarter size and there are LOTS of them). Domboro's solution (found at any large pharmacy) and mix 1/2 packet to a couple or 4 cups warm water and scrub lightly the spots twice a day. Iodine sometimes also works. Neither can be gotten in the mouth, nose or eyes and ears.

*Duck itch which is a parasite in water where lots of ducks poop

* allergy to a new rug, car etc..

I too would be interested in the dermatologists report so don't leave yet

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

Just saw your thread now....

My dog had lots of yellow, crusty spots all over his body when he was a puppy and it was a Staph. infection.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Thumbs down Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

I have been having the same problem with my 6 y/o Rottie for about 9 months now. First starting off as a few "Hot Spots" then after the 2nd time I shaved him this past Spring he broke out in a "rash" all over his body that eventually opened up and bled. Even though he was ruled out for Ringworm, Mites, etc. and underwent antibiotic and Lyme dips it only resolved for a short period of time. I have changed his diet, supplemented with fats & vitamins, etc. but at this point it has seemed to come back all over his chest and mane. I have been bathing him twice a week with medicated cortisone shampoo and have taken every cleaning and prevention to limit Mosquito exposure. I would greatly be interested In what your Dermitologist determines as my Dog continues to be "depressed" as this skin problem is now on his face and he is bandled with a shirt, cone, and booties to keep him from scratching. His room looks like a blood bath daily and I am at wit's end!

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

Jankster, that sounds horrible! I hope you get some answers as well.

Rocks Dad...I don't have any answers for you either, unfortunately. From just seeing the pictures, I would have told you to immediately change his diet - my dog had something remotely similar as a puppy. But since your boy is an adult who has been on the same food for quite some time, I guess we can rule out a food intolerence. Changing to Canidae (or any other of the super premuim foods) is still an excellent choice for his long term health.

Have you changed laundry soap lately? If he sleeps on your bed...

Has the smell of his breath changed lately? Is he behaving oddly?

He probably got into something outside - and since many of our dogs here camp and swim, we'd love to hear what the derm. says. Good luck.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

It's Staph. I'd bet the farm on it. Looks like ringworm but it does bubble, open, crust up and get bigger. It spread like wild fire all over my Cairn one year and he had it again this summer. I slacked off on his Frontline and sure enough...we had a staph problem. My Cairn's seems to be connected to fleas. Staph can occur anytime but watch more for it in times of immune system changes ie. puberty.

I am not a vet I should state although it should be obvious ;)

Lymedip works well but I generally use the meds and the dip. By the time I see it through the Cairn's hair he is usually covered.

Thanks all for the response. Melisssss, what medication did you use? Did you ever determine what the cause is? My vet suggested some very expensive allergy testing but am not sure if it is worth it.

Re: Another Skin Issue (HUGE PIC)

Jankster941...If it helps at all...my 10 1/2 yo male Samson has a staph infection and it looks identical to the pics posted by Rock's Dad. He had 3 hot spots originally that turned into what frontierrotts refers to as "rottie crusties" in multiple areas all over his body, primarily on the back torso area. (Frontierrotts really knows what she's talking about....she helped me a lot with my skin issue and Samson.) I have been using Domeboro's solution for the past week and see a considerable improvement...I also took him to the vet and he is on an antibiotic in conjunction with the solution. It has made a considerable difference...if your rottie has this, please take him to the vet and get a good antibiotic...combined with the Domeboro's, it is clearing up my boy. See the attached thread that was started recently...Hope it helps!
