HairLoss

I have a 4 month old male Rottie who is doing great except for the fact that it appears he is losing the hair on his snout. He has hair, but its very thin in that area. He has an appt Friday, just curious on what your opinions are?

It could be demodectic mange. Does he have any little spots w/ hair loss anywhere else (legs, feet, anywhere else on face)? If that's what the vet feels it is & it doesn't progress or he doesn't have any other spots, he might well get over it on his own.

What are the usual treatments that you guys use for demodectic mange? I work for a veterinarian that routinely dips with Mitaban every 2 weeks until the mange clears up but this doesn't seem to work well for alot of dogs. Some come in for 10 dips or more and it still doesn't clear. I have also seen them use Ivermectin to treat the mange. What do your vets use? Is is beneficial? Does it totally clear up the mange? (Just Curious)

SableMom: I used to work for a dermatologist so have a bit of knowledge about the two manages. Demodex mites live on everyone's skin. Stress (foods, environment, etc) will bring out an overgrowth. You can dip all you want but until you remove the stress factors you'll have the demodetic mange (overgrowth of the mite). We used to have models come in with break outs -- demodex rosacea -- it was from the over use of moisturizers. When they stopped the moisturizer the lesions disappeared. Scabietic or sarcoptic mange can be treated with dips.

I wouldn't ever dip a puppy for demodectic mange. There are topicals that can be used to treat only the affected area. I don't like treating the whole body for a localized area. I feel like it puts a stress on the immune system. Like was said, you have to relieve the stressors or treatment won't work. Could this possibly be a staph infection? I know my friend with GSD has a young one with staph on his nose that produced hair loss.

Did you change laundry soaps?? My Gomez lost all the hair around his eyes at six months old. After a lot of testing it was concluded that he was allergic to the Tide laundry soap that I washed his blanket in. I switched to a hypo allergenic soap and in a short time the hair grew back.
