| immune mediated thrombocytopia
My rottie two years ago was treated for immune mediated thrombocytopia. He sent 2 weeks in I.C.U. at the teaching hospital at Purdue, and several return trips(2.5 hour drive). He was on heavy doses of prednisone for 5 months. I know what the disease is, but I have not been able to fine alot of information on the subject. Striker has not had any recurrances. I know this disease is rare, but not uncommon. Can anyone help!! To top this off he also has food allergies to beef and beef products. We have to special order his heart worm medician. I don't think it is related. Striker will be 7 years old in April, he is my first rot. We were very careful on the breeder we chose, interviewing several. Did we miss any thing? I am truly in love with the breed, (husband was right). |

| Is this the disease you mean? This came from a Bearded Collie Health page - www.newmex.com/beardiehealth/glossary.htm Autoimmune Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). An autoimmune disorder that destroys blood platelets in a manner paralleling AIHA. More common that AIHA, affected patients develop small pin-point hemorrhages or bruises of the skin and mucous membranes. Breeds with white and dilute coat colors seem at increased risk, and cases typically affect middle aged animals following some stress events (hormonal changes, and drug, chemical or vaccine exposure). Some patients have AIHA as well. Some other page you could try - www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/CCAH/default.htm www.golden-retriever.com/dodds.html Being young its always interesting to find out about dieseases in rotties and dogs in general because you never know when they'll pop up again. Good luck and let us know what you find. ------------------ nick teifke nteifke@kcc.com www.angelfire.com/wi/1strottie icq# - 28884141 |
