| Concerned about cherry eye about my Zeus. Back in July I took him to the vet for what they called a "cherry eye" the third eyelids flips is what I was told. I could have surery right then and there or wait till he is ready to be neutered or if we decide to wait to breed him ( want to do this at least 1 time). Here it is Sept. almost exactly 2 months away and now it's starting in the other eye. They gave me drops hopeing that this would help the muscleflip or I could play with the eye myself to get it to flip back. Mind you I almost got sick in the vets office when she did it. Is this a hereditary thing? How does it happen and why? I'm beginning to think I'm doing something wrong. Any advice would be greeatful. thank you |

| Re: Concerned about cherry eye If indeed your dog has cherry eye, I'm not sure why your vet suggested to wait to treat this condition. The little bit of research I did noted dry eye can cause chronic irritation of the conjunctiva and cornea. If left untreated it can cause other problems including keratoconjunctivitis sicca aka dry eye. Dry eye can cause pain and chronic eye infections. Repeated irritation of the cornea results in severe scarring which will become apparent. Corneal ulceration may develop. Blindness is a possibility. |

| Re: Concerned about cherry eye I have had cherry eye surgery done on Bulldogs. I have a bulldog who's cherry eye will go back with placing your finger on the "ball" and placing it back in place. If you can get the lid back in place...do it!.. If not have the neuter done now and the eye taken care of. And as for dry eye,you can use drops to help keep ulcers from developing

| Re: Concerned about cherry eye Inheritance is suspected to play a role in the occurrence of cherry eye. Rottweilers with cherry eye should not be bred. nict mbr abnorm |

| Re: Concerned about cherry eye I spoke with his breeder and he says that he has never seen cherry eye in a rottweiler in 7 years and has only seen eye encroachment 1 time. He has also stated this is not a hereditary or genetic disorder. I have a guarantee with my Zeus and wondered how good it really is. I don't want to get rid of him and I'm not going to breed him now because of this, but feel that he should take care of the portion of the vet bill that is for the eyes. Do I have anywhere I can look to get proof for this disorder being hereditary/or genetic or should I cut my losses. So of lost with this. I feel cheated and taken advantage of. ANy help would be appreciated. |

| Re: Concerned about cherry eye I adopted Jake at 6 mos and he had a cherry eye. I went back and forth as to whether have a specialist do the surgery or my vet and in the end opted for the vet. He looks perfect now and you would never know that it was there, he had the surgery a year ago July. The vet warned us that it could sometimes come back, but so far so good. If you have any questions about the surgery or recovery, feel free to email me. Sue
