It could be allergies, although they usually affect both eyes. It could also be entropion (where the eyelids turn in enough for the eyelashes to irritate the surface of the eye) OR ectropion (where the eyelids droop & collect irritants - like Basset or Bloodhound eyes). Have your vet check his eyes. If it is entropion or ectropion it's possible the dog will need surgery. Nancy ------------------ von Dorow Rottweilers doggo1@apex2000.net

I forgot to mention another pretty obvious possibility - an injury to the eye. Unless there's something really glaring it's possible that only a vet exam will be able to find it. Nancy ------------------ von Dorow Rottweilers doggo1@apex2000.net

DanR, hi! Does your dog ride in a car or truck? If so, do you let him hang out of the window or over the side? Which side does he like the best? Rotten's left eye looked like he was loosing the hair around it, and the eye drained more than the right. We took him to the vet, and they swabbed his eye and found an infection, which the vet said was very common among dogs who rode around alot in cars or trucks. He sees it mostly in stock dogs who ride in the back of the pickup all the time. He gave us some eye drops, which I applied 2X daily for 10 days. It cleared right up, and the hair is back again around his eye!

OR could possibly be demedectic mange. The vet should be able to do a scraping to verify. Do not dip the whole dog! They should be able to give you ointment. The hair loss around the eye is sometimes a sign of this, but the draining is not-so chances are it is indeed an irritant or infection, but check this out also. Good luck.

My male also had some minor hair loss around one eye, although I don't think it was noticeable to anyone but me. He has always had a little discharge in both eyes in the morning. It doesn't appear to bother him - no head shaking, rubbing his head against things or otherwise attempting to scratch the area. I had our vet come up and check his eyes out thoroughly - just in case. He did not find anything obviously wrong - no skin disorder; no injuries or foreign particles in the eye - but said that it could possibly be an eyelash that turned inward a bit. He did not recommend any action at this time, but said that if anything changes like color or amount of discharge, or if the hair loss (which was not noticeable to him) gets worse, we will then have to do something. I would strongly suggest having your vet check this out.

Dan- About a year ago our male rottie had the same symtoms. It started off as allergys to the bermuda grass that grows here in Phoenix. We took him to the vet and he did a dye test on the eye and found a scratch on his right eye, probably from his hitching it. Stared with antibiotic drops, prednisone, and atropine. The swelling reduced but the scratch did not improve, and we ended up taking him to a eye-vet who diagnosed a detached retina. He disconued the atropine and began using a eye grease. We were very fortunate after a 3 week period the retina began to reatach or he would have required surgery. His eye looks different but he has full use of it. Now with the bermuda in season we wash he face with plain water every day and have not any had any more problems. Hope this can help.
