Elbow Dysplasia

My 27 mo. neutered male was just diagnosed with bilateral elbow dysplasia. This wouldn't be so disappointing if this was the only genetic thing wrong with him. He has already had TPO surgery on both hips for hip dysplasia, and had one hock fused because of OCD. He is scheduled to have arthroscopy surgery on both elbows. Does anybody have any pros or cons of same? Any advice or warnings? I'm seeking all the help I can get.

wow, do you have your hands full!
your vet knows best regarding this matter, follow his advice.
You have the right to know everything regarding the treatment he will give your Rott. Ask him all the questions you have.

Is he showing any symptoms of elbow dysplasia? If not, it's quite posible for him to have a normal life as far as ED is concerned. Many dogs with it have no symptoms or problems. There's also a lot of controversy as to exactly what constitutes ED. It's not real clear cut. Otherwise, the same as with any joint problem - good diet, keep excess weight off, appropriate exercise, joint supplements - MSM, Hokamix 30, glucosamine/chondroitin, etc.

With your dog's history to date, you've already had lots of experience in surgical after care! And it looks like you're in for more practice in the near future. But rather than a Senior food I'd put him on an adult maintenance food and give glucosamine/chondroitin supplement separately. I doubt that the amount in the dog food will be adequate for his needs. If he's a good eater you can always add vegetables to the food for bulk with no calories. Besides, they are good for him - chopped broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, whatever else he likes.

Nancy,

He is limping on his left fore limb. The x-rays show arthritis in both front legs. The vet thought that he has a possible FCP in the left. The vet who will be doing the arthroscopy told me that FCP is hard to show on x-rays, but will be able to tell with the arthroscopy. I am feeding him Nutro Natural Choice Senior which has the glu/chon. He weighs 100 lbs., and is by no means fat. The vet did want about 10 - 15 lbs. to come off. So both my boys are on diets and hating every minute of it.
