Cisco is developing calluses from contact with hard surfaces. It's just the same as if you went w/o shoes--the soles of your feet would toughen up. The only way to avoid calluses is for the dog to lie on soft surfaces--& from what you say, doing so isn't Cisco's preference.

Thanks Angelbunny, That's a relief as long as it's not unhealthy for him to have callouses. I was worried it might be something I was feeding (or not feeding) him, or some type of bug bite, or an allergy. Guess I'm just a paranoid, overprotective rottie mom who worries about every little thing. http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/wink.gif Maybe this winter he'll prefer carpet and blankets for a few months (but judging from last winter, I doubt it. http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif ) Cricket

Furless patches on elbows Recently, I've noticed that Cisco is starting to develop a spot on each elbow where the fur is not growing. The skin showing is grey in color, but is not sensitive or painful. The skin is also not flakey. He is two years old and has a preference to lie on hard surfaces: concrete outside and tile inside. When he uses his dog house (Dogloo), he'll drag any blanket or pillow outside and lie on the hard plastic doghouse floor. Also, when I tell him to "down", he drops so fast and hard that you can hear his elbows "thud" on the ground. Do you think this is a normal condition, just wearing the fur off, or the beginning of a bad skin condition? Is there a way to regrow the fur? I rubbed some skin and fur conditioner on the spots today which contains sodium lactate and safflower, lanolin and mineral oils. Cricket

Cass has them also, first she developed "water balloons", then they turned into calluses. Its from the pressure of their weight on their elbows on hard surfaces.
