If he's vomiting this long after eating it's probably something you should see a vet about. If it was shortly after eating I'd say it was more likely just eating too soon after exercising or drinking a lot of water, or both. But the time lapse indicates the likelihood of something more serious. Pancreatitis is a possibility. Nancy ------------------ von Dorow Rottweilers doggo1@apex2000.net

Pancreatitis is a possibility, so is Inflammatory Bowel Disease...sometimes it's just the food! My dog, who is also 5 years old, eats Nutro lite Lamb and Rice and suddenly started to do the same thing your dog is doing. The vet feels my dog probably has IBD (I've never had her put under to get scoped and a definitive diagnosis, since she's quite healthy, just poops a lot!!). Anyways, vomiting can be a sign of this, though she's never done it before. I took her in and the vet put her on Flagyl and Reglan (a stomach mobility drug to help get rid of acid buildup). Neither really made much difference. He did say that some dogs just can't stand to have acid buildup in their stomachs and it can start to bother them as they get older. I tried feeding her three times a day, and if you stick strictly to feeding her at regular intervals, this works. Unfortunately, if I'm out and late getting home, she vomits. She cannot go more than 8 hours. I, personally, felt it had something to do with the light food. I tried mixing other dog foods with it, but because of the IBD, they gave her gas and the runs. A friend gave me a sample of Neura intestinal diet, said it had worked really well on her mom's dog. My dog gets 1 1/4 cups, three times a day of the Lite dog food. I started replacing the 1/4 cup with the Neura. The vomiting disappeared. I purposely left her 11 hours one day on the weekend to test my theory and she didn't vomit. I can't explain it! We're going back to the vet in the next few weeks for blood tests, just to make sure everything is okay and that it is not something more serious. I doubt it is, I once had a little dog with pancreatitis and her symptoms involved more than just vomiting on an empty stomach. I'll see if the vet has any explanation for why a 1/4 cup of this food has solved her problem. I'll let you know what he says. Sounds like your boy is already under the vet's care. I'd mention this to him, just so you can rule out anything serious, but if this is the only thing happening and the vet finds the dog to be healthy, you might try adding just a little of an intestinal diet of some kind. These are usually very low in calories and fat and shouldn't interfere with your dog's diet.

Vomiting Dog I have a 5 yr. old male who for the past 5-6 days has been vomiting about 8 - 9 hours after eating. I currently feed him Authority Chicken Meal & Rice Lite; he has been on this food for about 2 yrs. Both my dogs were recently put on a diet, meaning no doggie treats at all (per vets orders) only pop corn, rice cakes, and carrots. He won't eat the carrots though. My mother mentioned pancreatitis. Any thoughts?

that's all that your vet told you to do? did he/she give the dog a complete physical exam and blood picture, at least? is its shots updated? has it been dewormed? there are many factors ------------------ Abel Manalo College of Veterinary Medicine University of the Philippines

Abel, Wasn't sure if you were talking to me or Terryann. I thought perhaps it was me as she didn't mention her vet saying anything. I just switched to this vet because the last one I went to just shrugged his shoulders, told me to try and control the vomiting with food, didn't put one finger on the dog and charged me $42! To say I was furious doesn't even begin to cover it. http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/frown.gif To answer your questions: 1. The dog had the most comprehensive physical exam I've ever seen a vet do! 2. She has been tested for worms quite recently and was negative. This vet immediately tested her for giardia, which was also negative. 3. Stool analysis showed higher than normal bacterial count, hence the Flagyl. The Reglan was given to hopefully provide some relief to the vomiting while we get to the bottom of this. 4. All shots are up to date. 5. He laid out a plan of action we're going to follow, next are the blood tests, then barium x-ray and perhaps an endoscopy, if he feels these are necessary. Are you satisfied with the treatment now? http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif Didn't want to bore everyone with the whole visit, but since you're a vet (or vet student?), I figured you'd like to hear all about it! Thanks for your concern.

Just as a follow up, I stopped feeding him the popcorn - since the vomiting started about the same time as the diet. He has not vomited for 3 days now. He seems happy and healthy; however, we are watching him.

Terryann: How much popcorn were you feeding your guy?? When I pop corn using our hot air corn popper, I'll always give our 2 girls a handful or two of the freshly popped corn before I've added butter or salt. They love it.

Terryann, Perhaps there's a bit of a dietary sensitivity to corn going on that's making him vomit. Good idea to keep your eye on him, but perhaps you've figured it out. http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif If it returns, I'd check it out with the vet.

AngelBunny - I was probably feeding about a handful or so a day, without butter or salt. Both my rotties loved the pop corn, but I've heard that some dogs are allergic to corn - so now neither of them get it. I don't know what else to feed to them for snacks - low cal snacks.

right on, Terryann! yes, maybe it was the popcorn... sometimes these things just work on common sense http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif don't you just hate it when those scaly little bits of corn(shells?) stick to your teeth! probably caused gastic irritation, just as what happens when dogs eat grass to irritate their stomachs to induce vomitting...
